Ian (1071) tried to buy some "Triumph Herald " type tie rods ends yesterday at the Mini King....this is for a 7.5" disk brake front end (and I think with a quick rack).

Anyone heard of this mod

The Herald rod ends are supposed to have a slightly extended thread body to get more purchase on the tie rod.

No - Sprite ones are totally different, they have a larger diameter thread.

hi, sprites had 2 sizes of tie rod ends. up to 71 had a bigger thread (same as late model morris minors) part number gsj169. later sprites/midgets from 72-79 had smaller and longer thread which fits mini racks - part number gsj158. these are the ones fitted to all triumph spitfires. the longer ones that most mini places sell are these. cheers.

The Repco book lists the Dufor/TRW number as TE126R for the Sprite/Midget/Morris Minor. And TE179R for the Mini and Morris 1100. (just a thought they may be cheaper)

Hi, some of the later model mokes and all of the imported minis with the disc brakes had a slightly different steering arm fitted to them, i usually fit the australian made steering arm it is bent more towards the steering rack and allows you to use the standard aust steering rack,
You can check what arms are fitted to your car just look at the part number stamped into the stering arms if they start with BTA Or BTB they are the uk type the Aust type starts with AYA,

Well I found my longer tie rod ends - at roughly twice the cost of the standard arms.

All in all, a waste of time. The new arms pretty much matched the old ones....about 1/8" longer than the "standard" items.

However, when I got the old ones off there was actually about 8/10" of thread engagement.. So the extra length in the tie rod end didn't matter diddley squat.

At least I've got another spare pair of arms now ......when I need to replace them next time - in about 15 years or so...

Longer tie rod ends are generally only required when fitting negative camber as you require the extra thread length... they're only about 5mm longer from memory and achieve absolutely nothing if you already have adequate thread engagement, as you found out. What were you expecting to achieve by fitting them?

Well that's the whole point. I do have negative camber.

I would say the longer arms are about 2 to 3 mm longer - and there's so much thread on the tie rods that the extra length is irrelevant.

What I was expecting was that I would need the extra length - based on the stories re negative camber that you also seem to have heard and the fact that the ends fitted to my car (about 15 years ago) were of the longer variety.

My point is that - unless your setup is somewhat different to mine - don't believe the stories because you'll more than likely find out that the more expensive ends are not necessary.

I totally agree, you fit the longer tie rod ends when necessary, which is generally when negative camber is fitted. In your case you didn't require them in the first place (despite negative camber). There is some variance in the length of standard tie rod ends, some are basically as long as the longer ones. But some are shorter. If you are on a shoe-string budget the trick is to find a set of standard ones that are a bit longer, but still at a standard price.
