yer never buy a second hand helmet... your head gets thrown around even in a heavy spin so hitting something would hurt without something good on you head. i have a 300 dollar motorbike helmet, agv. does the job, although im going to buy a proper car one soon as the hobby is turning into a serious idea of a career. i personally think open face mhelmets are crap and wouldnt wear one, but thats just my preferance. for club, trackday etc use, you cant beat a full faced motorbike helmet for the money.

open face is fine if it is for ocasional use but yeah if it is for seriouse use spend a little more cash i have a kbc vr-2 assasin cost about 380 tracey has a nitro full face hat cost 220 i also have a aria classic open face cost 350 tracey has a nolan open face that cost 300..... the full face is always worm on the duc i like to have my face coverd as the speeds i can do on the duc the wind buffeting the full face is much more comfy the harley i dont do much over 130 on it so it is not so bad
try a few different helmuts on because they are all modeld on different heads so what may be fine on me will be very uncomfertable on you

(on Top Gear) What brand and type of helmet does the STIG wear?

Looks cool with the white helmet and silvered visor.

Ray.

If this is soley for non-professional car use then don't discount an open face. Visibility is WAY better, not to mention ventilation. On a bike (or jetski or open cockpit) you have moving air to make use of the vents. In a car you've got nothing - the times I used to wear closed faced I nearly baked and/or suffocated.
I bought a $60 open face for motokhana/autocross work. It passes all the same tests the $300 or $1500 helmets pass....the difference is appearance (I don't care) and comfort over extended periods of time. I'm not doing a targa (yet) so don't care about that either.

Chris, I used to ride motorbikes... alot. I spent way over $1000 on my Helmet because its got graphics on it (same helmet without the 'Troy Lee' designs was around $600 I think.

Everything is remavable, adjustable, washable, visor snaps on and off in seconds, yadda yadda...

Ive never washed it, never pulled it apart and never used half the features :S

Even on a bike, things would fog up (ie/ the visor) so I used to pop it open at traffic lights.

You might want to think about open face if you will always be in cars champ...

Pete.

Any place that sells 50cc scooters usually has cheap open face helmets for sale too. (or buy a scooter and get one for free with it).

A nice cheapish brand is M2R. They have a fairly plain base model helmet that sells for around $100 brand new, called the 'M2R MR8'

These are my helmets. As you can see I really let my imagination run riot with the unique colour schemes.

The Simpson is what I was using till about 2000 when I gave up racing. It is too old to use for racing (according to CAMS) but I could still use it for track days and for when it is my turn to be the Stig.
The Arai was bought for me by a Mate when he was building a car and wanted me to drive it. The car was stolen before we got it on the track so I have never used this helmet.
Both these helmets are motorsport helmets and are what you have to have for top level racing. These helmets meet the Snell SA (Special Application) rating not the Snell M (motorcycle) rating.

It wasn't letting your imagination running wide as much as leaving room for advertisers to promote their brand awareness.

Castrol or Shell would have gone well on both those helmets. Just a mere $100K per helmet.
