The canister looks like an old fashioned vibration sensor. Some old car alarms had them. Inside the tube theres a long springy lever with contacts on the end, when the car gets bounced up and down (say by a burglar getting in) the contacts change state (either make or break a connection) and the alarm goes off. They're very unreliable, they're either too sensitive or not sensitive enough, so I suspect thats why there's a switch next to it, to switch it out if it keeps false alarming.

I think that going by the location that the switch would be the on off switch for the alarm.

When I got home last night I fished through the correspondence for the car from BMC and my Late Aunt - the only owner of the car (I've got the entire history of the car in a suitcase...).

It looks like it was a "You will replace my substandard Mini or I go to the Courts" situation - lots of issues with the Mini850 she traded her Fiat 500 in for in 1963.

Reading the 1960's letters from BMC, the corporate sexism is pretty rude "your a woman - you broke the car" was the explanation that came back from BMC on a number of occasions. My late spinster Aunt was a hospital matron and not one to be toyed with. In the end (after 2 years!) BMC replaced the 850 with a new Deluxe, and tried to pacify her with including free extras like a 'Security Package' including seat belts, radial tyres, fog lamp (long gone), motion alarm, quater light locks, steering wheel lock, etc.

So I guess this is the "Alarm".

The "steering wheel lock" is a work of art in itself...

that body work in the boot looks pretty good..

the outside paint is dull, and the bright work needs cleaning, the floor vinyl has gone a bit crunchy round the edges, the stitching between two of the panels on the passenger seat has broken, the idle is up when hot and everything vibrates like crazy (not overly impressed with the new engine mounts) but apart from that its legal and back on the road.

My aunt also had a few run-ins with BMC in the 60's, one memorable occasion involving the B-series engine in her Morris Major. My father carried the engine into the offices at Zetland and dumped it onto a managers desk. They coughed up for a new motor after he persuaded them into it.

On closer inspection i have two different tail lights on the Deluxe.

One has three screws and one has two screws.

The documents I have indicate the three screw light is a replacement taillight that went on in 1977 as part of repairs for minor accident damage casued by "trolley-scrape".

Ive found some replacement new plastic light lens' for three screw type lights (minisport) but not for two screw type...

Q: Should it have two screw or three screw type for the year of production ('65)?

If its the two screw option, Are two screw lights even available still locally (Australia)?

a 65 should have the 3 screw (Lucas UK) lights.
You can still buy decent new lenses for these from UK.
The 2 screw ones were Lucas Australia, only replacement lenses for these now come from the far East and are crap- they fade quickly.
