I'm sitting here ignoring work and a random thought just popped into my head: are the keys reversable?

If so, what's the difference between an 8 degree key (as an example) and using a 1 degree key turned around, and moving the cog a whole tooth??? A complete set would then be 5 keys not 9.....

Be nice, never actually seen one up close, just pics....

Last time I looked, 1 tooth was 18° timing change. (360°/20)
That's why they make them from 1-9° offset.
Yes I use them. I run a Triger belt drive kit (fixed pulley type).
I had a VP3 cam, it was 10* out on the key in this pulley. So I MADE a 10* one.
Then, I fitted an RE13, it needed a 6* key to get right.
Now I have an RE282, it runs a 4* key.

I bought them from www.minispares.com over the years, it's cheaper than getting them here.
I keep 2-4-6-8 and 9. And I still have the 10, somewhere.

Well there y'go then

Where the hell did I get 9 from......

(and I didn't click that if it was 9 there wouldn't be a 9 degree key  )

Hey Dr Mini, just saw you had used a VP3 cam, in what sort of engine was this? I am thinking of using one in a 998 + 40, lightned and balanced bottom end, good spec 12g202 head, 42mm weber and extractors. I want it to be a nice free reving engine. What lobe center line angle was your VP3 on? What did you set the cam timing too?
Cheers and happy MINI-ING!!!!!

My VP3 was a Camtech.
LCA I have no idea, I set it with an offset key to get the timing figures close to their specs of 27/56 inlet, 68/27 exhaust.
Cam lift at lobe is .309" inlet .319" exhaust.
Duration is 263°/275°

It's not a bad cam in a 1275. Pity I wore the lobes off it in 40,000 miles. I was running S rockers and offset bushes.
Could have been the well known premium oil I ran- I won't diss it on here but PM me if you want.

adjustable timing gears work just as well, but yeah to save money then you need ot get the whole set to make sure you have them correctly installed.

I find the roll master gears are junk and cant get them close enough with out using keys as well but the dowl type form uk is fustraiting to say ythe least everytime you get close to where you need ot be you run out of adjustament and need to adjust teeth then start gain with down pins.

rotor slid is the best and easy to set up.

Mason, good reminder. Haven't been in there a while. I deal mainly with B&H simply because they're on my way to work. Both places know A series like I know sandwiches though
