What methods does everyone use to
change the primary gear seal
if you do not have the special seal tool

Thanks Felix

Drive a narrow screwdriver through it and flick it out.
I made a tapered alloy protection sleeve to slide the seal over the splines, although you can wind plastic tape onto the splines and peel it off after seal fitted.
To fit the seal I used a piece of PVC pipe and a BFH. If I did it often in the car, I'd make something better.

I normally cut a strip 3" wide and 1/4" bigger than the circumference of the crankshaft from the side of a pet soft drink bottle (pick a smooth sided one , not a coke bottle with it's ridge) , clean up the edges so there's no lip and put it around the inside of the seal , push the sleave and seal over the end of the crank and pull the sleeve out in a turning motion once the seal is in . I used to have a left over scrap of pipe the right size to tap it in but lost that so I use a wide punch and little taps all the way around noe , will have to get another bit of pipe :(

In the time it take to get the clutch housing cover of you can have the engine out, when you have the housing off & the new seal in place, put some tape over the primary gear to protect the seal when the housing goes back on.

Wrap the primary gear with tape

Use scissors to "modify' a soft drink can, plus some tape to keep it together and put it over the primary gear.

There's my two methods when you don't have the correct tool
