Hi all - here are a couple of pics of the interior of my Cooper S, just behind the B pillars, left and right, just under the side windows. As you can see there are 2 holes on each side, symetrical and only about 1 to 2mm diameter - they appear to maybe have had screws in them.
What do you think these holes were used for? They seem too small for seat belt mounts or roll cage bolts. Got me stumped.

oil leak?..what oil leak..that puddle under the car is just sweat from all that horsepower

Had the car for about 6mths, and yes interior is virtually stock standard.

They are for the original seat belt clips. They are white and come in an early and late type. The later ones were wider between the holes. All became brittle, and were fragile from the get go as you only have to reach around and reef the seat belt once to smash them.

The one above is the early clip, the holes are only 23 mm apart, and it hangs on the clip by the seat belt buckle.

the later one has holes 33mm apart (or whatever that is in imperial fractions, I'm not prepared to work out...), and has the belts slide in from behind just to keep it out of the door jam. The lower one is in two pieces, the white half was still attached to the car, while the dirty portion was down in the bottom of the rear bin. An obvious fate for many of the clips. I would reccomend digging around in there to try and find them, you might just get lucky.

When I first spotted the holes I was convinced some spanker previous owner had drilled a pair tweeters in..


New camera = nice photos too. The old one had jagged in and could only manage about 80 percent of the scanned lines.

just another question - were these hooks standard for all cars fitted with belts, or just some models?
I can't recall them being in my deluxe way back in my youth (but advanced senility is setting in - I can't even remember if it had belts!).

Sort of remember them but not sure what car they were in.
Seat belts were a very new concept and I am not sure but I think it was 1966 when they became compulsorary and even then it was only in the front.

Seat belts all round wern't compulsorary until perhaps 1970. ???

I think my 1968 Cooper had those plastic (larger type) holders for the front seat belt and it was on the B piller. I am hazy because I was doing my two year nasho thing from Oct 1968 until Oct 1970 and cars were a bit removed from my frontal lobe thoughts.

My recollection is a bit hazy but I think came in with Mini-K/MiniMatic Mk2/Cooper S Mk2

My 74 van had ones like the top one but they were up beside the top of the seatbelt mount on the B pillar

My 850 has these seat belt hookes but are a different type again, only one screw. No other holes and I belive they are orgional, because they are painted over (the guy that rebuilt it cut corners like this) yes the actual hook part is broken off.

The 850's while having the holes didn't actually come with seatbelts. They were available aftermarket from brands like Britax and Kangol.

I found a set of kangol seatbelts however that I did fit to my 997.
They had the aircraft style of buckle (but a much simpler design) with a heavy flap. the flap was so heavy that under really extreme braking they would lever out and release the seat belt! I can think of no more opportune time for a seat belt to undo than under emergency conditions....

My K had the larger clips completely intact from it's previous owner (who owned it it's entire life up until i got it). In the first week i had the car I managed to snap the drivers one off.

My S doesn't have them, but the belts come with hanging clips on them anyway.
