Hi Josh,

Just a few questions for you, some you may not be able to answer.......

1. How long do you think the engine had been sitting before it was run by you?
2. Did you change oils prior to running it?
3. Did you go semi-synthetic or fully synthetic in PJ?
4. Did you change filters at all during this time?

Obviously with the age of these engines, this is something that concerns all of us using the 4EFTE.

Thanks,
Tricky

1. At least 2years since i've had it...? Then however long it sat in Japan before it came here...That motor really didn't look like it had been looked after and had high mileage.

2. Yes - Most motor's should come here with no fluids - but i did have to drain mine :)

3. Standard Mineral Was Used.

4. Oil Filter was replaced when the relocation kit was installed.

I think most of you blokes are pretty keen, throwing an unknown history 4EFTE in and expecting it to perform like a new one.
It's a Toyota- they may be near bulletproof but I bet in Japan they get servicing neglected, as they do here.
Many Toyota owners there and here wouldn't know where the oil filler or the dipstick is...

I'd be pulling it apart first, maybe that's just the way I am.

Thanks Josh for the info - mine came full of oil too. It started first go and ran beautifully when I picked it up from Rolins, but that was 2 year ago now, and it hasn't been run since.

MY line of thinking was to replace all the mineral oil with semi-synthetic, run it for say 500km's, then replace it with fully synthetic and new filter. This will allow all the detergents in the synthetic oil to remove all the sludge and crap in the motor - possibly alleviating the cause of what happened to Josh's.

Doc - very sound advice - and a little time and money invested will forestall major headaches down the track.

Cheers,
Tricky

My ran fine for 60km on the dyno before devloping the knock when i took it for a drive...

It's luck of the draw, Dan, Matt, Brad all whacked there motors straight in with no probs.

Personally after having it happen to me, there is little to no effort required in replacing the bearings while it's out for the sake of ~$60.

I am also replacing the front and rear main crank seals as Dan is having his possibly leak into the clutch housing now so will be a motor out job for him too.

As well as the timing belt and you should be right, short of a full rebuild.

My Rav4 doesn't need oil, Toyota put some in when they built it and the mechanic changes it when I get it serviced. Its got 200,000km on the clock and I don't check it between services. I wait about 12 months between services.

My brother in law had a new Corolla a while back, company car, had Mr Toyota's oil in, he kept on driving when the oil light came on- obviously it needed some more Toyota oil.... but he didn't look or care.
Engine needed a new crank and bearings, he's lucky they covered it under warranty.

My point above was, various people I know with Toyotas NEVER take it to a dealer (they are cheapskates) and NEVER change the oil...

Mine even came with the water in the radiator  was an awful black colour, but when i checked the head galleries they were clean as a whistle, no corrosion at all :D

Josh, your old bearings look scoured which obviously caused the problem :(

Mine came with oil coloured oil, green coloured coolant, and even cranked over and started on the battery that came in the half cut. Had just under 100,000 on the odo so I think I'll throw mine in with fresh oil and do Archangels idea of changing it after 500 kms.

Toyotas are tuff, I just think your scared yours by bolting all the shiny bits to its outside!

We drove our old KE70 corolla for about 3 years without servicing it. We were waiting for it to get a canary for the rust, but no one picked us up for ages and it just kept going. I drove it to the wreckers!
