My veglia tacho is playing up so i thouhgt of using one of the two smiths ones I've got. Now they have a + switch contact is "constant 12v" on ignition, a -12v contat which is earth - a lamp connection (positive) and I cant find the connection for the coil wire - there's that plastic assemly through which the white wire in both of them passes but is the nut on it being used as a contact?

NEED HELP PLEASE

Mike,
That is the older type Smiths tacho- the coil current passes thru that loop and it uses inductive pickup. There is no `direct' connection to the coil like your Veglia one.
Not compatible with all electronic ignitions.

What is the Veglia doing? If it's jumping, look for loose connections..
It's a better tacho, IMO.

The veglia is jumping - I rewired all the connections - no improvement.

With the smiths tacho what is the loop between? is it just neg.coil to neg.coil?
Does it mean I cant use it with the Pulsar dizzy?

The loop goes in the neg wire from the coil to the dizzy- you have to extend it all the way from coil up to tacho and to the dizzy.
I seem to remember it's particular about which way the wire goes thru the loop, too.

Antique design.. dates back to the '60s. Bloody years since I had one..! oops, I've got a Smiths in Barney with Pulsar dizzy- it doesn't read right either..

According to DK Lawson on MiniPortal site, they are NBG with electronic ignition.
I know the later Smiths in Clubbies work with Pertronix or Pulsar dizzy, perhaps they are different design.

Try it!
Or just do what kazjim & I did- go to Ardita Spares and grab one (Veglia Borletti) from a Fiat 124 Sport.

Yea a Veglia from 124 is what I had till it started playing up for no apparent reason. Then I thought I'd rather get a proper "Smiths Max Hand" - Now I've got two of them and they dont appear to be useable with my elec. dizzy. Damn.

Lurch took it down for some maintenance a week ago. Still not up.
I'll ask him when on MM forum today.

Rewiring my tacho after the rats totally demolished the wiring.
Its a Kmart brand  which is probably same as some other generic brand I hope. It worked fine (we wont say how long ago that was) but it has 4 thin wires coming out of it.
A red, a white, a green and a black.
Ive got a 78 clubman, does anyone know where I can put these wires to make it work?

but i think its
red - power (ignition)
green - coil positive side
white - light
black - earth.

check with the others but, well i think that's right

Here's my guess
Red... positive wire(attach to greens on fuse box.
Black...Earth to body
Green... probably the light... connect to red orred/white wire behind dash or park light switch
white... trigger from coil.... most likely negative distributor side

thanks dr trim
um when you say red (power) you mean plug it into the fusebox, same side as the fuel pump (so it comes on with ignition)?
and white to light? where exactly do I connect that?
