Some 997 Cooper questions :
Body colours are Saxon Green roof with Osmond Green body , what colour should seats and trim be , and what pattern should be on door cards ??
Is fuel pump mechanical or electric ??
Does engine number on ID Plate have capital A in it or small a , as in Cooper S ??

He owns an Osmond/Saxon 997, and I believe its quite original.

Definitely electric pump. the original cooper 997 and 998 engines did not have the hole in the back of the engine to accept a mechanical pump.



Not sure on the trim, but would hazard a guess at almond green. Best wait for Graham.

No pattern on door trim. Just a sheet of vinyl with padding attached to back a la Morris 850. Trim colour is light green. Carpets a green short loop pile with brown flecks. Will post photos of interior etc. Note: door trim has had other material stuck on it sometime in the past hence the glue stains/wrong colour. Oh, and capital A on ID plate and elec fuel pump.

The 997 Cooper block has no provision for a fuel pump. The original seats were covered in a good quality vinyl unlike the 850 which had a patterned (checkered or lizard skin) cheaper vinyl material. The seats in the photo are the original style.

Oh, exept the fuel pump hole, very early 997 blocks had a fuel pump hole and 1000 'cast' into back of block, as opposed to no pump hole and 1000 tag. There are also some extra 'bosses' on the front of the block, I think these blocks coul relate to the "Formula Junior" blocks, I'm investigating further!

I only discovered this the other day looking at a couple of my early numbered engines!

That is a very interesting observation Graham. I'll put that in the data base. I have another very early 1962 Cooper (body around the first 200 produced in Aus) but unfortunately as is the case with many 997's no original engine. It also uses the heater system with the blower mounted on the right inner guard. Interestingly this car seems to be rally/race prepared by the factory with a very neat hole in the inner guard to access the flywheel nut and two speed nuts fitted for a quick release grill (to neat to be done by any others I would think) and a hole above the right indicator lamp which may have been for auxilliary lamps wiring.

Yes mine has the fuel pump hole and 1000 cast into back of block . The car number is in the early 2200's , would this be late 1963 ?? Engine number is in low 20,000's ie 203 - -

The ones I have are earlier than that one AJ, yours I would say is a 63 car, does it have the UK type number on the chassis plate something like 366--- ? or just the Aus number like 22-- ?

What type of aircleaners do 997 Cooper have ?? and what is wheel rim size and type ??

Airfilters are pancake type with a coarse mesh painted hammer tone grey. I can send u photos if this helps. Wheels are standard mini 41/2 J, painted black fitted with Cooper wheel trims
