Ok, put EBC Greens on the BOC last service (~4000 miles ago) and my mechanic reckons i'm already down to about between 20-15%!

They're great and i love them (in combination with my A539's ), but... :?

:?: So, the real question is this:

EBC Greens are hard compound.

EBC Blacks are soft compound.

Therefore, will blacks wear down even faster because they are softer or is that logic not applicable to brake pads?

get him to show you the pad - I have had a mechanic say that and they were 20% gone not 20% left.

What are your discs like ?

I had a Daihatsu Charade that had magic pads , they kept growing .... The dealer I got it serviced at the first few times would give this elaborate report on the cars condition , first the pads had 5.7mm left , then 5000 k's later they had 4.2mm left , then 5000k's again they had 6.3mm left , then 4.8mm left .....

Thanx, Bloke. I can check the pads myself, the real question was more regarding Greens v Blacks in terms of life. :)

Do they look shiny and smooth or pitted or grooved ? Shiny and smooth will let the pads last longer , pitted or badly grooved will be like pushing them against sandpaper .

I'll have a look. Cheers. 8)

In the future if i need to replace the discs, is there a vented option for 12'' wheels and is this a good idea?

You know I just had a mechanic try to tell me the same thing on my motorbike, it's got EBC greens as well up the front....

I had a look and they're better than 50 percent. I told him this and he said he wouldn't go past the next service without replacing them, so I asked why is that, why do they put so much material on if you can only use half, and he couldn't answer me, just muttered something about brake failure and wandered off...

Sounds like a scam to me..

Two years ago I helped a neighbour change the pads on his excel. A month later the car was put in for a service and the pads were suddenly ground down to the steel plates. He drove it home because he didn't believe it and we proved the mechanic had swapped the pads out! We had used brand A (the type was still legible on the back), and these were not the same.

Bugger. :P Nah, nothin' like that. My mech's a good family friend - he actually lets me sit in on the services so i'm SLOWLY learning stuff. :)

Can anyone comment on whether the softer Blacks will run down quicker than harder Greens?

Here is another non answer :P

The pad wear is as much determined by your driving style as the cars behaviour.

For non - ventillated discs I use a hard compound
For ventilated I use a soft compound

Why is that?

I find that non-vented get up to temperature faster - but the lack of heat disapation promotes wear - so I offset that with a harder compound and therefore the reverse for vented.

Ok. After reading that over a few times i think i get you.

So, basically, the softer compound Blacks will wear faster than the harder compound Greens?

im running ebc blackstuff's with unassisted 7.5" discs, and through the hills they fade out pretty easy, and they're probably messier than greenstuffs.

my next lot of pads will be another brand i reckon
