Hello Everyone...

I currently own a 71 Mini Leyland. Its currently have a 4spd manual transmission. I hope to find out if it is possible to convert the car to automatic so that my fiance will be able to drive it.

Hope the members from this forum can give me a headstart and advice on the various options that i can undertake to resolve this task...

Hope you guys can help.
Hear from you soon....

Investigate the front-cut route.

Late model Japanese Mini front cuts are being brought in by Steve @ Brickworx Racing (08 8374 1277).

8.4" disc brakes, 998 A+ automatic, subframe, dash if you want it... the whole shebang.

Worth looking into...

edit: being a 71 its most likely Hydro (unless changed by a P.O.)
In this case if you wanted to keep the Rover subframe, you'd have to change your rear frame to dry as well.

As far as the subframe goes, you'd be better off trying (its hard) to get an aussie mini-matic subframe. Will let you keep the hydro, and no new holes will need to be drilled
in the underside of the car to accomodate the rear subframe mounts (different mountings on rovers).

Either that, teach the missus to drive stick. Would be cheaper. :D

The Auto engine is very different to the manual engine, so it is not just a matter of changing the gearbox, you need to change the whole lot. Also the Auto subframe is different to the manual frame. You could alter the subframe to make it fit but it would be much easier to get the whole lot in one go. Like willy says, Brickworx would be the best bloke to talk to.

A 1971 Mini could have rubber suspension but is is more likely to have hydro. (people forget the poverty pack Mini 1100 8) )

Easiest way is to buy a Rover engine and frame conversion.

Been there done it & had nothing but troubles with the auto gearbox, too much work for little enjoyment.

There are, but there's no gearbox bits left.
Limited and hard to obtain spares for the box too I believe.

Were they another unique Australian model that no one really cares about coz it doesnt have cooper written on it, or a 1300cc engine?

Must be time to have those extinct parts remade then - just like thousands of other classic cars across the world. :D

All the automatic parts are available. The only problem is the parts come from the UK.
Take a look at http://www.jpat.co.uk/ and download the AP Automatic part catalogue at http://www.jpat.co.uk/jpat_pdfs/AP2%2014_11_2000.pdf

Are these the same as for a 60's mini-matic?
