Looking at fitting 1inch spaced drums on all 4's on the van.

Putting an order together at the moment - 16 x ($4.30) Wheel Stud - Cooper S, Clubman GT, LS & S ---- should fix one problem.

I noticed you can order longer drum brake retaining screws. Are these required? (that is the retaining screw on any drum setup).

Shopping cart = $800+, trying to keep it down!

Not essential as the wheel will hold the drum on. If the drum comes off it means your wheel has as well.

Watch it if you buy these screws lately- I bought some from a well known Mini parts importer in Sydney and they turned out to be 6mm thread, not 1/4" UNF....
So measure `em.

Thanks guys - don't think I'll bother with them.

Always had to fiddle and swear to get the drums off in the past, if they come off with the wheel = even better. (as long as I intend for the wheel to come off :D ).

One last question. The van has not been on the road for 8+ years - just moved about from time to time. The brakes still seem to work ok. Would you replace all the wheel cylenders and hoses etc in one hit?.....

Or keep a good eye on them and replace as required? My clutch slave has started leaking, I guess the rubbers perish over time. Thinking of bitting the bullet and doing the lot.

I would replace all the wheel cylinders and hoses, put a kit in both the master cylinders, and either rekit the clutch slave or replace it, if bore is pitted.

The screws are there to centre the drum rather than hold it on. The studs will mostly align it but there is movement.

I will redo the brake and clutch systems then, thanks doc.

Any tips on finding kits for the masters? Had a look at a couple of online stores - they have all the bits I need, except master kits!

You've got me worried now Smac! Sounds like I should get the retaining screws - any suggestions?

You would probably be surprised if you just called the local brake guys as well. I've often been surprised at how they pull these kits out from under the counter.

Ahem...
The drum locates on the OD of the drive flange (front) and hub flange (rear). Just like 99% of other cars.
The 2 screws do SFA once the wheel is on and the wheel nuts tight. Which is why the Japs don't bother with em.
