If you are braking or accelerating in the wet though, the narrower it is the better. More weight per square inch to squeegee the water out.
One reason Falken FK07Es (165/70-10) are NBG in the wet is their width- once they get a bit worn, the water can't get out of the shallow grooves quick enough. :x

i thought the most important thing in the wet is the compound, followed by the tread pattern, the falkens have a nice tread pattern, but a low grip hard compound

anyway i found falkens to be bad in the wet :)
maybe a fresh set would do better though.

simex are cheap! cant complain for $88 a tyre.

good point biam, F1 and V8 supercars are heavily regulated.

And here is the difference.

A 10" Contessa with 165/70R10 versus a 13" Superheavy with 195/45R13....(there is only about 10-15mm difference in rolling diameter)

But beware, going 13" rims to fit bigger brakes is a sensible (IMHO) option, but it does come at a penalty.......
1. Increased unsprung weight (12 kg's per corner with tyre!)
2. Higher wheel frequency (unsuited for rubber cones, which like low wheel frequencies)
3. Increased leverage on the bearings (premature wear and replacement)
4. Potentially wider offset, means bigger flares (13 x 7)
5. Potentially wider offset means trimming the guards (13 x 7)
6. Potentially wider track my negate road legality
7. Wheels may be dearer, as will the tyres

But, for every penalty, there is a benefit................
1. Able to run bigger brakes (up to 9.5 inch if you went Wilwood etc)
2. Larger contact patch means better grip
3. Larger contact patch means better frictional braking (if brake swept area remains constant)
4. Larger choice of tyres
5. Larger choice of rims and offsets
6. Makes a Mini look more modern (purely subjective)
7. Rolling diameter slightly taller which means lower revs at hwy speeds

Your choice, but I chose 13's because of the look and stance it gives to the car (subjective I know!), and it gives me greater flexibility when it comes to tyre choice, brakes and the rims themselves. But, if you want that period Mini look, ditch the 12's and stay with the 10's. I wouldn't put 12's on at all, either 13's or stick with the 10's.

Any reduction in handling can be potentially offset by better suspension parts and design.

My $0.02

Cheers,
Tricky

i think the rolling radius is near enough as to make no difference with 175/50 on 13x6

How hard is it to get some 165-55/12 YOKOHAMA A048R in Oz and are they ok for road use?

I am trying to get some 165/60x12 A539's but that is proving to be a bit hard at the moment..

goodluck with A539's. A048R's are easy to get. I think you would need to get them from Gordon Levin in emu plains if NSW - everyone else will be getting them from them as they are the motorsport dealer, so might pay to go direct to them.

Around $200ea

For road use..depends on how many km's you do. They rekon you'll get around 20k, but i think i'll be lucky to get 10k out of them!

Beanie stuck some Simex's on the Rover - did just fine for driving to work...

Better than the worn-out Falkens

Ok, if the A539's are hard to get new would anyone have a good second hand one for sale??

I really just need one for a spare because the one I have now is only a Goodyear 145/70x12...

Unsure - what about a session at Wakefield when The Cat gets on the road?

A driver swap would be the likely format, and we could rate on dry grip, wet grip, braking, wear (?), ride quality and noise.......

Smokie,
D01J's are very similar to A048R's - very soft, very sticky, and dont wear well.

Cheers,
Tricky
