Okay.
I've got a couple of classic Minis, a MINI Cooper S, and a VW Beetle, a Kombi, plus a few other cars.

I always give a wave, or a thumbs up or a nod at any good looking car on the street.

I find that, over here in WA anyway, that more MINI drivers will acknowledge me when I'm driving a classic Mini than will other classic Minis!! :?

MINI owners are not very good at acknowledging other MINI owners, though.

Classic (air cooled) VW people are extremely friendly to other (air cooled)VW people. Waves, smiles, yelling out "nice car" etc. The only water cooled VW's that get acknowledged are the Wasserboxer Kombis (T25), and the New Beetle.
New Beetle and classic Beetle people seem to get on a lot better than the MINI and Mini people.

But if you want enthusiastic responses from people across the classic and retro motoring spectrum , drive a Kombi.

My rules:-

Classic mini; wave and smile
New mini; i they wave, i'll wave, but no smile
Any other car 30 or older wave if they can see, toot, swerve, brake, anything i can do to say g'day.
Sports cars, accelerate till beside, drop to third, boot til i'm about 100m in front then watch as they go speeding past.

Actually truth be known if i see a classic mini on the road i'll almost always try to get beside the thing, just love the sight of mini's in a pack

And just yesterday i was driving down hackney/fullarton rd when a bini pulled out in front of me, as soon as i could i got a spot next to him, dropped to third and booted the living crap out of poor old 'johnny', silly bugger in the bini tried to keep up, but by the time he actually started to gain i was doing 100 and on the brakes.

Not too many Mini's around me but when I see them and I'm driving mine I always give them a wave. Mostly get a wave back too.
Probably the old 'people are more friendly out of the big smoke' thing ??

I tried to perfect a method of mooning to people who don't wave back but it prooved to be too dangerous, not all roads have rumble strips.

when i drove my clubby i remember a bug driver tried to race me, he took of and quick shifted it and went passed him at cruising speed, i think he was embassed in the fact that he was beaten by someone not trying, didn't encounter any bini drivers, i think the reason why was because of the area and most round there were females, i think there saw their binis as a giant hand bag and if you ask me i'd say thats a better use for one of those things,

If I see one I always wave to them or give them the nod, occasionally I'll do the thumbs up but yeah waving is my way of acknowledging them. Mind you, lots don't do the same back :(

When I'm in the moke I do the following
Moke: Wave and get annoyed if they don't wave back, assume they haven't seen me
Roundy: Wave and usually get a response
Clubby: Wave and usually don't get a response
New Mini: Nothing, those rich old ladies wouldn't wave back anyway.

I too ... always give a wave, or a thumbs up or a nod at any good looking car on the street ... just last Saturday I got / recieved "the nod" from an EK holden driver AND a MG TF driver (who was way over the over side of the intersection) ... I think there is a general respect / solidarity between people who own / operate older motor cars ... regardless of model ...

I always try and "convoy up" when I see a classic car of any description ... a couple of months ago ... driving down from the Dandnongs I buddied up with a glorious red E type ... exchanged a "thumbs up" and proceeded to motor into town in convoy ... glory days ...

I've never received any form of feedback from owners of BMW mini's, which surprises / dissapoints me a little ...

I've received nothing but abuse from drivers when I ride my bicycle, which I have learned to live with  ...

when i had classis mini's, i got waves all the time from other classics, not just minis. id get notes under my windscreen saying "nice mini, i drive a brown one i call it Peanut" etc etc..

Then when i had a BINI, no waves, nothing. I wanted to wave to classic mini drivers, because i always used to in my old mini.. but it felt kinda emabarasing.. i wasnt one of 'them' any more.. so i never waved. maybe thats why BINI drivers dont wave much.. they feel inferior..

Last week, I was behind a beautiful white/cream Clubby at the lights, I waved and the owner wound down her window and waved like crazy, so too did her kids in the back! And yes I waved, but to honked first to get their attention. 8)

But a lot of the time I've beened snobbed by Leyland/Clubby owners, I've got, "what the hell are you doing?" looks and other times absolute ignorance!

Never from a Roundy owner, I think this is because, many young people buy Leyland's as they can still be had a cheap, a kid nearby me has got one, he says "it's alright" and well.... it is. Only cost 2 grand and is very original, and still has nice paint.

Mini owner's aside, I've waved, with returns or simultaneously, with MGB, Austin 7 and Rover 3500 owners. Tried a Morris 1100 once but they didn't seem to care. :( .

I've been snobbed by Jag's, Holden's (snobbed by a Holden, not possible I thought...until!), old Ford owner's hate me, appart from Escort owners (Mk1 owner's are nice, MK2 owners, 4/5 don't care at all, but aren't rude).

Basically, I do all of the above, but I do wave at Bini owner's if they acknowledge my existance, I've parked next to them at intersections and haven't been looked at (which is weird becasue usually at any intersection I ahve every surrounding car having a look :) )other times, I've had them wind down ther windows and chat and that's great I reckon.

Also, I had a commodore owner wind down their window and ask me how much my flag on my roof cost, I told them, "the price of paint!". Ahh good times, gotta love driving a classic! :D
