Hi guys,
What is the deal with Mk1 brake master cylinders? Some have an identifying ring at the base and some don't. I used to know but cannot recall right now.

Regards
Al

The MCs with the ring around them had a different main seal (not a plain cup)- it fitted over the piston similar to the bottom seal.

Hi Kev,
Thanks for that. I seem to recall there was a change date, any ideas?

Al

I have just looked through my parts books and I can't find a changover date.
I have a 69 Mini parts book (just before the change from Deluxe to K) and a last edition Morris 1100 parts book from about 72 and neither of them mentions a change.

Karcraft shows both part numbers in their catalogue but no date.
Ring = two "ring" seals. Part number BAU1247
No Ring = one "ring" and one "cup" seal. Part number 50957

Can anyone describe the 'ring' a little better? I have a number of MC's here, but the only differences I see are in the top where the brake line union screws in.

The groove varies, sometimes it is on the bottom part below the reservoir, other times it is on the reservoir itself. It is basically a groove that runs all the way around the master cylinder. Sometimes it's hard to see if the m/c is dirty.

Sorry Timbo, none like that one I am afraid...I had a look last time you said you were hunting for them..on a bright note though, I still have a rivetted 3.5 inch rim in careful storage around the back!

I had a look through the MC's again, one has a ring around the taper down at the top of the MC. it is quite distinct having been cut in by a lathe. The bore is .75 and (obviously later down the track ) stainless steel lined.

No stress, it's doing no harm around the back.
