The fact is that on an A series engine, these air pumps created more drag, more energy was needed to turn the pump, & hence more pollution was created, the tests were done by the factory prior to fitting them for for sale to suit the new the ADRs & yet the Govt didn`t care, they just wanted the new cars of the day to be "SEEN" to be doing something to combat the air polution problem & basically told Leyland that if they weren`t fitted then they weren`t selling their cars here. So they fitted them & were able to maintain car sales.
simple as that...Them`s the facts.
sad hey?
In a ideal world the pumps where added to decrease certain types of pollution, not greenhouse gases, they where the attempt at decreasing NO, CO, HO, produced by the engine, cars these days have cat for that purpose i believe.
However depending how they were designed and implement the outcome could of been anything.
