I have an 850 with newish seatbelts, the retractable kind. The seatbelts themselves are in very good nick. However they don't retract very well because of the angle they have been mounted on.

Does anyone have retractable seatbelts that they have mounted and work properly, how did you do it?

Cheers,

Michael.

You can successfully mount retractable belts to an early car but you need to get the correct bracket so that the reel and the fixing at the other end of the belt can both be attached to the same mounting point. Klippan belts are available with this bracket and I've seen these fitted to a few Minis quite successfully.

If the belts don't retract properly then they are unsafe as they won't be able to do their job properly in an accident, so I'd look at either replacing them or sorting out the mounting properly so they work as intended.

Retractable belts, fitted on the wrong angle, will chafe on the steel pressed outer body of the retractor untit, and wear the belt very quickly.

The frayed webbing will not be nearly as strong as it should be.

Also, they will not like to un-reel - ie you cant put your belt on. There is a small ball device that is sensitive to angle, and about 3 degrees is all you have to play with.

We carry (probably) the largest range of seatbelts in Adelaide. PM me for any details you may need. Can do a special ausmini price.

Easy when its your job
