Hi Peps,

I'm new to Ausmini so I will tell you all a little about myself, My name is James, I'm 29 with a wife and 2 kids, I have a 1977 mini clubman, Bright red with fat wheels, I bought it about 5 years ago, I love it no matter what any one says.... Currently I want to do some work to the engine / box / clutch / exhaust... and I need some help in getting the right/best parts... The engine has been swapped out at some stage in its life and replace with what I was told to be a 998 cooper. I no longer believe this to be right. Can you help me identify what engine I have?

9F/SA/H 527532 From what I can tell this is either a 997 cooper or a 1071 cooper s, the head is 12A145( 8 ) the last number has a drill hole in it. It has a rod change box.

Any help would be great...

That's a 997 cooper engine number.

If you want a precise date and time the engine was built you will have to wait until Morris 1100 see's this thread. He's got so much info its amazing!

BTW, welcome to ausmini. Please post some pics of your clubby in the "Members Mini Gallery" section, we would all love to see it.

Gotcha this time, I think its a 997 Cooper and that is all I know! :lol: :lol:
I am only any good on the Australian models, I am not so good on the CKD models and I am useless on the fully imported cars. :wink:

Graham is the Cooper king. :lol:

The cylinder head casting number 12A145 would probably be 12A1456 which would be an 850, 998 mini, 948 sprite head.

The 997 Cooper would have come with a 12G202 head.

What an oddball engine to find it's way into a 77 mini Clubman!

Engine prefix is 997 Cooper but the number is way too high.
Last recorded number according to Parnell's book was around 9F SA H26376.
December, 1963.
Note the 997 motors were imported, with the UK engine numbers already.

Is it a completely imported car - clubby and all. Didn't the pomgolians still play with homologation well into the seventies.

It's an Aussie clubby, just with a strange lump. I was told it was rebuilt just before I got it. Is there any thing on the outside of the motor to help ID it? the plate with the cc's is missing.

How do I check the stroke?

Take spark pkugs 1 and 2 out.
Turn motor to TDC no 1 piston.
Put a biro down both plug holes in turn to touch piston, and mark it at top of plug hole.
Measure the difference, that is the stroke.
998 = 76.2mm
1098 = 83.7mm.
:wink:

I'm having some trouble finding TDC... I have found the notch in the drive pulley, According to the manual TDC is at 1:00. that didn't work so I tried the other 1:00 (11:00) and that gave me a reading of 80mm. not right either. Were should the notch point?

Many Minis had no TDC mark on the timing cover to align with the pulley.
There is a TDC mark (1/4) on the flywheel, it aligns with a pointer inside the little cover on the clutch housing. You need a mirror and torch to see it.
Failing that turn the crank pulley to and for until the biro in #1 cylinder is at its maximum height. That is TDC.
