Matches... I cant belive this, but I am living your nightmare dead-set straight after your post. 2002 Cooper R50 with ONLY 60,000 k's ! Were these gearboxes engineered by undergrad students as part of an assessment piece???

Noticed a whine in first and second and synchro noises on downshifts. Been to dealer for assessment today... whaddya bloody know.... $5000 for a new box. I've rang BMW Australia and told I'm well not happy. Getting back to me tomorrow. I also took it to a gearbox specilast today, he said I would get 'not much change out of $2500k' and noted that they had done a heap of work on exactly this problem since 2002. Said there was some sort of recall from the dealer.

So, this problem is known and expected. I'm a second owner, but with 60,000 ks on the clock I want blood.

Bugger that sux dude.
Ive done the same thing and took the mini to a gearbox specalist today.
He is going to source the parts and give me an estimate this week.
Ive re-buit a gearbox before and it cost me $2600 and i got a two year waranty on the box and work. So there is no way im paying 5K for the same waranty on a new gearbox

Let me know what BMW OZ say, as i might hassle the crap out of them too.

Id also like to know what the re-call was?
Most of the people ive checked with in the UK had bad thrust bearings, but alot of gearbox's from the 2002 mini's were dying with the same problem as mine at 40 to 60K.

Alrighty.... It's just come down from $5000 to $2095 at the dealer. BMW supplying a new box, apparently a new part number and this problem will not be present in the new box, I'm paying labour at trade prices ($95/hour) and i get a 2 year warranty. While I'm still stinging - I'm happy its not 5k. I spoke to BMW Australia on their info line at first, might be an idea to start there... but they end up going back to the dealer any way. Good luck!

Thats excellent. I could live with paying 2k, but not 5k.
Ive been told to ring BMW Australia to see if they can help with the price, but as you stated i t will probably come back to the dealer.

as if bmw don't make enough money off there cars, they have the nerve to charge 95/hr labour and if its from there body shop, they charge 150/hr!! 3 times any normal body shop.

Finally got hold of BMW Australia and all i got was attitude & because the car has done 110,000 k's they couldnt see the problem in me paying for it.
Id like to get that in writing ........ ..........At the 100,000k service: Please change the air filter, oil filter & the entire gearbox ....W.T.F.

The gearbox dude i went to gave me a quote for $2985.00 to replace the damaged gear box bearings and to put a new clutch in.
If BMW dont come up to scratch, ill be letting them repair it.
(Thats still 2k less than what BMW were going to charge with the same warranty)

Got the final word from BMW OZ and i will have to fork out 5K to get the gearbox replaced.

So I'm sending it to a gearbox specialist to have it repaired for $2800, then I'm trading it in for an EVO.

What a bunch of turds. Was it due to K's? They couldn't be more helpful when I spoke with them.

Finally have my car back from Sunstate gear box & diff.
total cost for the new clutch & gearbox rebuild: $2900.

I'm still annoyed the box only lasted 120k, but Im happy my repair bill never went over 3k.
1000 bucks for a new clutch and 1900 for the gearbox is pretty good. :D

However if anybody wants to get this done to an R50 build mini .....don't bother, I brought the last 4 bearings in Aust- ex Melb. You can still get the bearings from Germany for a price, but they do not make any gear or shaft parts for the midland gearbox anymore.

I got mine for $2095 INCLUDING labour. Turned into a real crap fight with the dealer as he had miscommunicated the final price as being inclusive on labour. According to his scribblings it should have been over 3k. I paid what I was quoted.

Then 2 days later, I was left stuck in traffic with no gears. Lost a clip off the selector, which had apparently been disturbed in the re-fit. $85 worth of tilt-tray later and the beast spent the night at Kloster BMW. To their credit, they fixed it and let me on my way. I figured they might hold me to ransom over the 'outstandings'. Hey, a quote is a quote is a quote.
