It worked... Cheers, 76.2ish. that make it a 998 not a 997 right?
The other thing, a number of people have said that this is an imported engine, I noticed that it has MOWOG Stamps with the aussie map around it. on the rocker cover and the block. the rocker cover has a morris label on it.

Has any one yet told this Guy to check if the block has a fuel pump hole location at the back that is still cast and no hole actually there ? The 997 Cooper never had the hole....

I believed that until recently as well, but apparently the early 997's actually had the hole...can't understand why this is however, as the mechanical pumps came in on the 998's in 65 did they not?

No, ALL Coopers had SU electric pump.
Even the 1st 850 had an electric SU `PD' pump. I used to have to get out and go give it a swift kick up its a$$ every 5 miles or so. So I replaced it with a Cooper one.

I thought Graham in Aus had popped up with this little artifact, I'll do a search...

Back in 1963 my mate had a new 997 Cooper. I used to tune it, yes it had electric pump.

Ooooh how did I miss this one!

Nice car wild w***y! original carpet too! I only have a small section of mine Crying or Very sad

I agree with all that Wild w***y says, he's spot on!

Oh, exept the fuel pump hole, very early 997 blocks had a fuel pump hole and 1000 'cast' into back of block, as opposed to no pump hole and 1000 tag. There are also some extra 'bosses' on the front of the block, I think these blocks coul relate to the "Formula Junior" blocks, I'm investigating further!

I only discovered this the other day looking at a couple of my early numbered engines! Laughing

Yeah I know exactly what you're saying Doc, it spun me out as well....

Actually, re-reading what Graham had to say about the blocks being closely related to Formula Junior blocks, this might mean that they were there for the dry sump scavenge pumps?

I would think so yes. The factory 648/649 cam has a skew gear at that spot to drive said scavenge pump.
The original Formula Junior cam (C-AEA544) would have had one too.

   That's one of the reasons the first couple of people that looked at the sports850 before me didn't buy it , they couldn't get it to start because of the fuel pump . Few swift hits and it clicked away merrily and I did a lap of the street followed by a cloud of blue smoke 8)

Had one of them somewhere but can't find it now and can concur that it has two helical gears , one for the distributer and the other in place of the fuel pump lobe .

The SU `PD' pump was a POS, and apart from cleaning the points you couldn't service it.
They were replaced on later 850s by a conventional SU `AUF' style pump.

Not sure which one it was but as soon as I got it back to goulburn the points and associated bits decided to fuse together into a red glowing mess so the wires were pulled in a hurry (don't like red glowing messes on fuelpumps  ) and it was replaced .
