I don't know how true it is, but I've read a couple of times that the manufacturing process generates more green house gasses than a catalytic converter will convert during it's recommended life time. Think of all the mining processes around the world needed for all the components of the steel, ceramics and the platinum, then all the transport to and from the smelters, then the transport to the factories that make them, and then delivery of the finished product

yep but they significantly reduce other nasties not just greenhouse gases. Given that cats reduce harmful emissions to fractions of what they were, and that they last 10 years of constant driving I would doubt that they produce more in production.

i think you can go to an exhaust place and they'll fix or replace your cat.

you can get low resistance inserts to replace the honeycomb - dismantle and stuff it in - cheaper than new cats and less power drain, but with enough backpressure for 02 sensors to work.

Oh, maybe it's a hump back then.

Here's one, note how it's gone blue all over from lack of oxygen:

Anybody else thinking they should put a shot into the whale and see the copper/ranger get splattered by it ???

Saw 2 Japanese tourists on the Stuart Highway posing beside a dead and bloated cow for photo's about 10 years ago and wanted to pull up and shoot it for the splatter effect in their photo's . My signifigant other at the time had no sense of humour :(

My understanding (from discussions i've had on here) is that it's "filled itself up" with nasties and now has broken down cos it's dead. :? That's what i understand - i may be wrong.

Also, you mention power drain... Hypothetically, if i were ever possibly going to take the stuff out of the cat, would it give me an admittedly tiny power increase?

Replacing the cats with hi-flow inserts liberated 40hp at the wheels in the Jag. So it can be quite alot.

I dont know enough about Minis to comment. However alot of FI engines require the backpressure for the lamda sensor to read properly

I've got a carby. Will that be an issue?

I had an XF Falcon and I figured that the cat was on the way out. I removed the cat and shook it and the honeycomb was loose and rattling around. I found that after applying a hammer and crowbar the rattle eventually stopped. 8)
Some of the honeycomb that fell out was blocked with crap. I stuck all the debris in the otto and reinstalled the cat.
I found that there was no increase in power and no improvement in fuel economy.
