What a great guide (with the pictures  ) Don't overlook the fact there is 3 pages to this guide - links at the bottom of the page.

And he has also done a 'How to" on getting the idler gear bearing out of the transfer case http://www.theminiforum.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=48044

Coool! cheers!

Buying the gearbox kit tonite from the UK (I've got the official go ahead from the Minister for War and Finances) including the uprated shaft and the diff parts.

Any other bits you would reccomend I change out in the box whilst I'm in the spending mood?

Check the shift forks for wear.
When you get the kit,, do a hardness test on the layshaft...

Ok, but I need to have it aprt to do that don't I, is there any wya to get a feel for the condition without having it apart? apart isn't really an option till I get my slow old brain around some challenging exams in the next 3 weeks. Purchasing is my upcoming exam therapy.

I thought I might let the line get a little hazy....

Yeah sorry it has to be apart, if you need new ones they are cheaper in UK (but still bloody dear).

Ok, I'll be happy to get these seperately later on. Or I could split the risk and get one or two?? Are they all the same part number?

Edit: No. One for 1st/2nd and one for 3rd/4th

53 pounds! OMFG. WTF is in these things? Are they made from gold?!

KC does say if you are real carefull you can squeeze them up in a vice - My rational would be if they need to be replaced I'd try the squeeze and if I stuffed it then I didn't loose anything as I was going to have to replace anyway but if the squeeze worked then I'm ahead

If getting the new improved layshaft it should be the hardened one.

What else to get? - a centre oil pickup. 8)

sure will..

Looking at the site now, it seems they are out of the 'kits' but that might just mean one small portion of it. I'll have to give them a call to specify the harder mainshaft anyway..

MS aren't interested in swapping out the crummy layshaft with a decent upgraded one. I asked specifically if this was possible, and the lady on export went away and asked someone (or made a cup of coffee ) and then came back and said no.

Apparently I can't get it for the discounted price otherwise...I asked if she was sure it was discounted as a kit and she said yes.
Basically she's not interested in putting them in individually.

Also there's no planetry gears available, and none on the horizon.

I was kinda left cold, and would rather deal with telstra tonite than deal with that disinterested crap.... :( ..

Send an email to [email protected] - it was he who told me they would replace the layshaft (Simon is the owner I think)

CC copped a hiding tonight in the end. I got most of the stuff I need for the engine end gearbox (except acouple of heavy items I can get here).

I ended up getting the gearbox rebuild kit from elsewhere, to much sadness going on at minispares UK. Everyone one is away, stuff shown as avaialable is not, stuff that isn't available actually is..... and they didn't have any of the diff parts I was chasing and couldn't give a date.

So I rang around and got a kit with the upgraded bits I needed and the excluded bearings.

I'm gonna have to wrap this stuff up for christmas I reckon...
