You are probably going to find that if it needs new brushes then it also needs the commutator skimmed and undercut. When you open the starter motor you will probably see that commutator where the brushes go is worn convex and worn right down to the black insulation stuff.

Then if your going to go that far you might as well press in a couple of new bushes at either end.

Um...
It's correct practice to undercut the mica in generators.
Not so in starter motors- current levels are much higher- you just machine the commutator true and clean it.

Stuffed around for a couple of hours last night with 3 dead starter motors.

One had very good brushes and the commutator was nice and flat. The other 2 had worn out brushes and commutators. tried to get all 3 working, with no luck. :( So now I have starter motor bits all over the place! I think I will bin the lot. So much time wasted friggin around with cr@p! :x

I wanted to bring the GT to work today so I wacked in my VERY GOOD starter that was reserved for my resto GT. Funny thing is, it is date stamped the right month / year for the car.

Needless to say it started first go.

Now I need a new starter for my resto GT.
