Coop

despite all huffing and puffing here, you know you want a Morris 850 because they were the original :) look here to see my 1964 version http://members.optusnet.com.au/~jenandmick/

Morris 850 built in Australia from 1961 to late 1964. They are showing up a lot more these days, since people are regarding them as valuable. At one stage they were just a lightweight bodyshell to throw a bigger engine in.

At the base end of the model range is my other car, the Morris Mini Minor built in Australia from 1965 to 1966. They are basically the same as the 850, but with wind up window doors. Yeah the photos of mine have slidey windows, but they are not original. I only know of one other guy who has this particular model, and he did a great restoration.

good luck in the search

michael

Coop

$2500 with a months rego left on it, although Duc said he looked at it 6 months earlier when the guy wanted $7000 for it. It is by no means perfect, and the guy did not store it for 40years, he drove it. But i got a pink slip from the mechanic around the corner who said that he overlooked the oil leak, exhaust leak, and something else i can't remember. He knows i am going to fix all the stuff like that anyway.

In the past 6 months i have had to
1. put a new exhaust on
2. rewire the main battery cable to the starter button
3. resleeve and refix the threaded bit for the lid on the master cylinder
4. change the points and plugs

this was fine to just drive around locally, which is what the guy usually did before us.
however a couple of longer trips has shown that the rings are stuffed on the engine.
so i have just
5. removed 850 engine to rebuild and replaced with 998cc engine

I will also at some stage soon have to
6. get new drums as the ones on there have been machined so far that the adjusters are wound so far in that they do nothing with nearly brand new shoes on it
7. replace some of the copper brake lines that the guy put in with steel
8. rewire the whole damn thing so i can be sure that the electrical gremlins are gone but this will probably be part of a total resto in a couple of years time.
9. fix a couple of minor surface rust patches
10. have the wheels polished
11. give the car the whole meguiars polish treatment
12. rebuild the heater so that the little flappy thing seals properly
Will keep me busy for a while i think

These are the things you have to consider when you look at any mini these days. Rember the youngest ones were built in 1978 so they are already over 20years old. Any car you get that is 20 - 40 years old, and your preference in style is for the older ones, then you will inevitably have to do something. If you have no mechanical skills, you will soon have some.

mate, the only reason these guys keep sticking up
for their round nose mini's is because they feel they
have something to prove, us clubman owners have
no need to prove how much better our cars are, we
dont resort to putting sily pictures up trying to
show how beautiful our cars are because we are
all so much more comfortable with ourselves

mate if you go into member mini gallery (on this site) go down
the bottom of the page and where it says "jump to" click in there
and go into members mini gallery and in there it has a post of
a 1978 clubman and if you click on that, there should be a
picture of a yellow clubby!! let us know what you think

regards
Chris
