Were gearboxes paint the same colour as the motor when the cars came from the factory, or were they just aliminium?

from what i know they were paint same colour
but the moke's and matic's engines are aluminium at the bottom (maybe flaked off) coz thats all i see when i change the oil

they were orninally all painted as when they shipped the motor's out for them to be installed in aus, to make them different they sprayed the entire unit, beacause is was easier. They look good either way, do what you like.
