I never would have thought of you as a joint roller:)

I would like to learn how to fibreglass, do you use the same techniques for cf?

Fiber glassing is quight easy but very messy  Just get your resin mix correct so your not waiting 2 days for the thing to cure. I'm not sure about CF but I assume it would be the same.

Well thank all of you for the nice words - very heartening indeed!

To answer a few questions regarding the last post:

Quote:
How high do your parcel-shelf speakers sit once they're mounted in the pods? Will they affect visibility?

Smegger - nah shouldn't do. They do not sit high enough to impeded visibility IMHO, but someone who likes to view the whole rear glass may disagree. In total, they probably sit as high as the centre bit of a clubby rear seat.

Quote:
Also I've never heard of 9" subs I did'nt think anyone made them.

Kenno - they are made by AudioPipe in the US - they come out of the same factory as MTX and Kicker. They are not top-shelf like say Boston Acoustics or MB Quart, but at least they fit! Dont need that much bass in the Mini anyway so I can guarantee they wont be turned up too load!

Quote:

Floss - yes pretty much, except that the CF is a slightly stiffer weave (4oz vs 4oz) than either bi-directional or tri-directional cloth, so it takes a bit of sticking down. I might put up a "how-to" on fibreglassing for those who want to get more acquainted with it

Once again, thanks for al the kind words and I am looking forward to posting an update soon.

Cheers,
Tricky

I wouldn't have thought they'd impede rear visibility any more than say, adjustable rear headrests. It'd be hard for an engineer or Qld Transport bureaucrat to find anything wrong with them, unless they stick out like the proverbial.

I imagine there'll be more sticky-outie things on El Gato to distract the inspectors without them getting worried about the sound system

Hi Folks,

Just a small quick update to show you all what the (nearly) completed rear parcel shelf board looks like.

All the carbon fibre work has been completed, and all that remains is now to spray-paint black where the board is still showing through. This will make it look like one integral unit. Spaying black (satin black) at corners and edges is a very standard practice with C/F, because of its reluctance to form a round anything even remotely radiussed!

Then, its a case of applying the QBR logo, and a couple of coats of 2-pak clear for protection (UV protection - as epoxy degrades with UV, as well as mechanical protection).

I am yet to do the sub-woofer board, mid-bass enclosure, doors skins and dash.

Enjoy....................................

And in the car. Answering Smegger's question as to whether they will be too high, personally I dont think they will. Feel free to disagree of course. Notice how they follow the contour of the rear screen.

And the fit......................

Next week's its the sub-woofer board's turn.................

Cheers,
Tricky

Looking good as always Tricky.

Presumably its made from CF to LOOK faster rather than actually go faster? Like, the MDF (and therefore its weight) is staying there isn't it? Still, I'm sure the faster bit will be a moot point.

Keep the updates coming.

Cheers

Madmorrie.
