Mufflers- those you cannot see through often use constriction, internal pipe squashing or sharp bends to reduce noise (and kill performance).
Intake manifolds- generally the straighter they are the better for airflow and power, whether Weber or twin SU or single SU.
Most single SU ones you can't see through, but with the best one (Russell Engineering's) you can. 8)

RC40 either single or twin box is excellent for any Mini from 850 to 1275.
I replaced my 1-3/4 pipes and RC40 with a 2" system on the 1360, purely because its latest state of tune needed a bigger one.

Buy an RC40, you can't go wrong.

Is the motor going on the Dyno? If it is, then work out the exhaust at that stage... you might need smaller, bigger, etc
I have a powerful 1132 and its running a 1.75" but a 2" muffler... thats what the motor wanted.
Its a straight through (like Kev mentioned) ... its loud, but goes really well... I got the muffler from Parramatta Exhausts and it was only about $85 the pipe from extractors to the muffler was around $30...

I have never run an RC40... I think it would be quieter than mine but I am not after quiet :D

Peter.

RC40 will not lose you power, is lots quieter than any straight through 2" one would be, has similar sound to the old Cooper S one.
These days with anti-hoon laws the less noise the better, you don't want to attract the unwanted attention of the constabulary....

Yeah it's a nice note but not that loud you will get pinged.

No no, I am not saying RC40 will have less power or anything like that... and I like the RC40 sound.

All I meant was that you can find out that on the dyno, your engine might need a different exhaust or something.

Loud is good I guess, but Kev is right, mine is too loud, gets annoying and the fines are getting BIG for noise :(

I actually want mine quieter... will get there eventually

i think i will go rc40 with maniflow lcbs, id like the noise for a bit, but like you said i would get annoyed with it. does anything apart from a connecting pipe go between the extractors and the muffler

Yeah there is Adam, its like a resonator before the rear muffler and I'm thinking of using it on mine if it's to loud. It looks like this,

Minis with LCBs tend to drone at around 3000 rpm with a single box muffler. My 2" system is WORSE for this than the RC40 was. If buying an RC40 and doing much cruising I'd get the twin box this time- it has a resonator in front.
