I've got an early clubman 1100 (remote shift, rubber Unis) sitting in the way in my shed.
Good points: Ran okay in the (terminally rusty) donor car and wasn't smokey after a few minutes running. Decent compression - 150-160 on all four. Oil light went out straight away on startup. All gears in the gearbox seemed okay.
Bad points: Lots of oil leaks! Covered in sludge. Bad flywheel ring gear means starting was schreech city! Clutch slips. Hasn't been run for 18 months but has been stored in the shed with rags stuffed in the ports/holes to stop crap getting in.
Originally this donk was going to get rebuilt and plonked into the Moke. But I managed to get a 1275 A+ Auto engine.
Was gonna keep it as a spare in case I blew up the Moke or van engine. It's more of a rebuilder than a runner. But if he's desperate I could be persuaded to part with it for a small sum.
But I'm with Poeee - get it towed to the boat, push it on (or get a tourist with a 4x4 to pull it on) the boat. Then push it off the other end and trailer it.
Where in Melb is this guy located?
