I'm curious, who is this grieg?

My mate PVA has run matics for at least 15years, including in competition, and for many of those was the only person who would go anywhere near those boxes, at least in Vic. His influence is the reason for my matic-moke.

But you gotta go with the advice you are given by your favourite Mini specialist (if any).

Yup, MR malure from Mini Classic. I am sure Peter's(PVA) advice is good, I just trust Greig's opinions on auto's. He has maintained man an auto and his partner runs around in one(all bit a silly quick stroker) It would be interesting to hear logic for both types of oil. I know that 20w50 is what is std in a mini motor. I guess there is a reason for greig to use otherwise. I will ask him next time i speak to him.

Yes, please do, I would be interested to know.

I remember the article in TME about his partner's stroker Matic. It set my mind thinking about how good a stroker Auto Moke would go. :D

Hey all. I hav 3 autos(850, 1000 n 1300). one thats on the road at the mo. Im just usin 20-50 at the mo. I met PVA when I was at Hay and was invited over for t n a tutorial on dismantling the auto box. That was very helpful to me. He even let me drive his auto mini that was very cool. He told me use a good oil n you wont hav and probs.
I know I was no help but this thread is of intrest to me. Two of my autos leak 1000 n 1300 havnt spent the tine to investagate where but I think drive seals on the 1300 the 1000 is some where at the bottom.

I've had 3 matics on the road- a Morris 1100 auto, a Morris 1300 auto, and 998 MiniMatic. All 3 are basically the same box.

The factory MiniMatic handbook (1969) says-
"SAE 10W/30, 10W/40, or 20W/50. Additional additives are NOT to be used under any circumstances".

I'd stick with 20W/50 in an old box, as the oil does get pretty hot. If running 10W/30 I'd want a cooler on it.

Don't run semi-synthetics like Castrol Magnatec 10W/40 etc, the bands and clutches won't grip.

Thanks for that, saves me starting a thread myself and yes mate, my matic leaks like a bitch as well. I consider that if its leaking, and im replensihing it all the time, its basically having a constant oil change :D

you have a better selection in 20/50 i think..
i believe most 10/40's tend to be designed for more modern vehicles and would be unsuitable for a matic which is easy to ruin with the wrong oil or so i have been told.

My Metro 1275 Auto engine originally had an oil cooler attached. I have the cooler, I just have not fitted it yet. I wondered why the Metro needed a cooler in such a cold country, when the 1100/1300 series cars did not. Perhaps it was the heavier body?

Either way, I figure I will ft the cooler. It can't really hurt, as the oil does seem to get rather hot on a hot day.

Could always take it to him to get him to do it for you... then you are covered by his professional indemnity insurance if something goes wrong

Greig services all my cars. They go in running 85% and come out running 200%... 8)
