all you need is a light foot and come up real close behind the trucks and get in there slip streams (this is purely joking and not recommended.

Well, we made it to Wyong... and what an adventure that was.

We had drama on two fronts, both caused by the weather. Firstly my flight into Newcastle was delayed landing, because an extreme storm had hit the airport. After half an hour of circling, the pilot made a remarkably smooth landing in a break in the storm, and then commented "Welcome to Newcastle, I'm sure glad we're on the ground". I don't know about anyone else, but when the pilot is glad to be on the ground, I definitely am.

Guess that's why they get paid the big bux :)

It took another 45 minutes sitting on the tarmac before they let us off, because the weather delayed the other plane occupying the terminal, preventing it from leaving. Let's fly JetStar!!

Anyway, turns out the weather caused the Mini a drama or two as well. Coming through the torrential rain produced a major squeal under the bonnet, followed by a blink or two of the ignition warning light. Had Dad worried, but turns out it was just the water causing the fan belt to slip a bit. It dried out at the airport waiting for me, and it's all good now. So here we are in Wyong.

Now, on to fuel economy, the reason for this thread :D In total, between Broadbeach and the last fill at Coolongolook (near Forster, NSW), the car did 602 km on 36.7 litres. That's 6.1 L/100km :!: :!:

Wow   That's _much_ better than I expected...

Tomorrow we aim for Myrtleford, via the Snowy's if we have time.

I was thinking about you as I drove ID10CY into Newcastle that night. Did it piss down or what  ? As I was driving my throttle got more and more jumpy, to the point that you could only depress the pedal in steps. Hmm, me thinks cable not very good, pouring rain, bound to go, I'm going to get wet.

I dropped into Kmart (the only thing open that time of night) bought a Bike brake cable, pliers and spanners. If it was going to break I was going to be prepared. Forgot to get a torch though :( .

Luckily I got home ok, which really surprised me. I thought I was bound to get very wet fixing the damn thing. You can get lucky once in a while.

Time for another update.

I can expect one first.

Firstly my apologies guys. Time ended up against us -- we had to be in Beechworth by 4pm to meet up with the family, so we weren't able to stop anywhere. As it turned out, we were late

We did end up taking a diversion, but not over the Snowy's, instead we left the Hume at Gundagai and made for Adelong, Batlow, Tumbarumba, Corryong, then Beechworth via Tallangatta. That stretch of the B400 between Corryong and Tallangatta was fun.. lots of fast sweepers, dipping and diving, and no traffic 8) 8) The new disc brakes and suspension are awesome, I've never had so much confidence throwing the Mini into the bends, and its ability to stop on the long downhill descents has to be experienced to be believed. 8)

Anyway, after the minor scare in Newcastle with the alternator, the Mini didn't skip a beat. All the way down it held 65psi oil pressure, and the temperature never ventured above normal, with the exception of the long hill climbs around Batlow. The only surprise was the oil consumption -- we were putting around half a litre of oil in at every fuel stop

No way would us young'ns get that mileage! :D

Yep, you're right there ;) With me behind the wheel (and 5-10km/h greater road speed...) the Mini literally drank the fuel... all of about 0.75 L/100 more

Yesterday's fills were: Pennant Hills (19.4L) for 7.0 L/100km, Yass (19.8L) for 6.8 L/100km, and Corryong (18.0L) for 6.6 L/100km. Overall, so far we've done 1580km on 106L, for an average 6.7 L/100km. Can't complain about that 8) 8)

Today we're making for Melbourne. If the weather holds we'll take the fun route (Whitfield, Mansfield, Yea, Flowerdale, Whittlesea), otherwise it's the boring but safe Hume.

Well, we made it, no dramas whatsoever. The final leg from Myrtleford to Melbourne took about 4 hours, via the fun route :D :D Made it on one tank, too.

The final figures for the trip were 2112km, 141 L of fuel, for 6.7 L/100km. The average definitely took a pounding with me at the wheel, but not by very much and only because I was keeping to 100 km/h, not my father's 90.

The really impressive thing was that the fuel consumption varied very little, from a best of 6.0 on the easy freeways, to a worst of 6.9 L/100km in the hills.

The first leg today was a short one, Morayfield to Broadbeach -- 134km of easy freeway driving. The not-so-good news is that the car used 12.5L of 98 octane, for 9.3 L/100km.

Yeah, that's gotta be a mistake. The Old Guy said he filled it before he left, but it turns out not to be quite that clear cut....

The brakes were simply awesome, and actually improved as they got hotter, biting harder with no additional pedal pressure. Really confidence inspiring, great feel.

What I can't explain is how the pedal improved as much as it has since I fitted the brakes -- it's as good now as I could ever have expected, and I've done nothing.

Tell you what, I'll be in Myrtleford in 3-4 weeks again, I'll bring the Mini up to make up for it ;)
