Is there a reference somewhere that tells us what each part means?

i think i can determine 4 distinct parts to it


for example looking at :

(1977 Leyland Mini LS)

022 X2 S4 M09

and

(1974 Clubman Panelvan )

021 A2 V2 M10

i can see that character 6 is S for sedan and V for Van


but the rest of them... it looks like there'd be some sort of matrix that calculates the model type based on the combination of all 4...

who can shed some light on it...

i mean.. don't get me wrong... i don't really care... they're only leylands...

They are compliance plates. No Leyland Mini here ever got a VIN plate.

I have a Leyland Moke 1976 parts book but it only lists the old Morris body plate info, go figure.

This is not definitive, but is from a page from a parts book I have. (the page, not the book). This is for around 1971

Firstly, there is a difference between a Clubman and a Leyland Mini 1100. The Mini 1100 is the base model, the Clubman is the slightly specked-up model, or more accuratley, the Clubman is the normal model, the Mini 1100 the base cheap fleet version.

YDO21 is the Mini 1100. YDO21V is the Mini 1100 van.
YDO22 is the Clubman.
YDO 23 is the Clubman GT.

Body number (not to be confused with chassis number) should have M2 over 21 for Mini 1100, MV over 21 for 1100 van, M2 over 22 for Clubman and M2 over 23 for Clubman GT.

Therefore it stands to reason (oh dear, logic and Leyland in the same context) that the first part of the number defines what model it is: ie. 022 would be Clubman, 021 would be 1100 van.

OK, so far so good, we've worked out the first digit. bloody brilliant.

The rest is basicvally a mystery, so I'd be interested too.

Had another look.

Also, YG2S6 is type for Mini 1100 sedan.

YJBAV6R is Mini 1100 van

YG2S7 is Clubman

YG2S8 is Clubman GT


The last part of the number is the transmission type and the engine size.
M09 is manual 998cc
M10 is manual 1098cc

Clubman GT shopuld be M12.

That's it. I can't help with the middle sets of numbers/letters.

The way the code works is like this...
022 = Model code = Leyland Mini S.
X = Compliance code. This will be an A, D or X depending on the year. (This code means nothing!)
2S = Body code = 2 door Saloon.
4 = Trim Level code = LS
M = Gearbox code = 4 speed, floor change, manual gearbox
09 = Engine code = 998

VIN only became real and mean anything after 1987 when the whole world agreed that they must contain 17 characters and records would be kept world wide and made available to other countries police and rego authoriities.

i started suspecting that just today actually and i was going to ask if the 021,022 clubby guys could stick their engine details in aswell
