I would think that a Matic with an 1100auto motor would probably be a good thing.

Yeah but they are rocking horse aren't they? I've only seen 2 in my (considerable) lifetime!
I thought the 1100S auto and 1300 auto were more numerous?

<edit> I can convert a manual 1098 block to work on a Matic autobox, if anybody wants one... :wink:
But it's probably easier to just bung a 1098 crank and pistons in.
The biggest drawback with the 998 Matic is they are a slug off the mark due to lack of torque- converting it to a 1098 would fix this shortcoming.

So are original matics worth much? i.e ones that have been restored, original engine etc.

They can't be that rare, I see one everytime I go into the shed. :lol:
I was thinking that using the 1100 crank in the 998 with a similar head to the 1100auto it would give a usefull power increase.

998 = 40bhp - 52lbs.ft torque
998 Matic = 42bhp - ??lbs.ft torque
1100 = 50bhp - 60lbs.ft torque
1100Auto = 56bhp - 61lbs.ft torque

I really like the 1.3i autos. Quite nippy up to around 60 kays.
By that point it's in 4th gear, and they feel a bit slower after that, but doesn't bother me.

i whole-heartedly concur....

i tried taking it onto the freeway..... bad idea....

even with the run up from mt osmond, i couldn't get it over 60 kph.... so i popped it of and went up eagle on the hill....

the run up from the eagle on the hill on ramp was another matter...

once it's at 100kph, and revving, it stays there nicely.]

Just out of curiosity, how much power would the auto handle before it started to die?

Well Greig Malaure in Sydney (Mini Classic) has built one for his g/f with a 1430 in it... :shock: It's got around 117HP at crank I think.
It lunched the gearbox torque converter? at the WSID drags last time. But it goes `pretty well'. :lol:

The Doc, master of the understatement. :)

That matic is a true sleeper, I remember when it went on the dyno a couple of years ago, most people didn't look twice at it as it looks like a granny car. It then did it's run on the dyno and it left everybody with a "WTF?" :shock: :lol: It came third in the big block category on the day if I remember correctly.

The old autos whether 998 or 1275 are pretty low geared (overall 3.76:1) as even though the diff ratio is 3.26, the auto's drop gears are about 1.15:1 (not 1:1 like a manual).
Not sure abour 1.3is though. :wink:

I found a webiste that lists the mid-80's Leyand Metro 1275 Auto as 2.76 final drive. Must be a misprint as a 2.76 with an auto wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding.

I'm pretty sure my 1989/90 1275 Metro box works out to be a 3.76 like the older autos. It runs about 3600 revs at 100km/h with the taller 185/60R13 rubber.

My clubman that had the 1275 auto rover motor in was nice to drive, would easily to 120 on the motor way at about 3,500 rpm with the A/C blasting away.

Be aware that the boxes are tempermental especially if the front cut its in has been sitting round for a while, the seals in the box go hard & gives you lots a trouble, trust me i know :oops:
