Excellent report Cush :D :D

The bottom line is, I love driving my minis, be they the 998, 1100 or 1275. :D :D :D

I'm much happier in them than the Subi.

Re the 998 auto being slow, and not giving you the gears that you want.

The trick with a 998 auto when you want to drive quickly is to drive it like its a clutchless manual. Don't select 'D' for drive, but instead use '1' through '4'.
Unlike conventional automatics, this mini auto box will hold whatever gear you select - not shifting up or down by itself unless in 'D'.

This lets you quickly build the revs up if, say, you want to merge with fast moving freeway traffic.

Cheers,
Ray.

great review except the bit about getting a 1275. what the 998 lacks in power it gains in efficiency. (let the debate begin).

go the manual!

I'd much rather potter around in a 998 matic these days on the short commuter trips around traffic. It's so much more relaxed.

998's do change painfully early - but i think it would have helped if you shifted manually on the tough hilly parts.

The SC 998 also would have felt like it had less low down low than the 998 because of the SW5 cam which has shifted the powerband up.

Good write up cushmeister 8)

If you adjust the kickdown rod you can change that.
All it does is make the gearbox think it's going slower than it is.

By memory there isn't very much adjustment on them? - think the max we could get out of brad's matic 3000rpm? and the second you lift off it changes up a gear
