Heyas, I've been redoing my wiring and just making sure everything is ok and going to where it should. But I have come across this thing which i have narrowed down to maybe being the flasher unit or a rear demister swtich?? Can someone clarify please.
The connections are as shown, one comes from the bottom fuse (output of the second fuse same as the windscreen washer and wiper) which is joined with another wire that has the length to go to a switch on the centre console maybe?, the other one goes to/comes from the plug which connects to the back of the dash. Theres also a spare place for another connection at the top, perpendicular to the other connections (cant be seen) but would that be an earth needed?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Cheers,
Dave

Gafmo's right, it's your indicator flasher unit.

It makes the "tick tick" sound when your blinkers are flashing.

Cool thanks for the quick reply!
So i assume that it doesnt need to be earthed? The spare connector on the top is just left vacant?
And would the wire go to the hazard lights swtich then?
Cheers,
Dave

Yes. Flasher cans come in two or three pin configurations, if you've got two-pin wiring then you can leave the third disconnected.

DTrain mentioned the hazard lights switch, how would you go about adding that? Is that what the extra connector is for does anyone know?

(I've got the same wiring config as you DTrain and have been puzzled about it but never asked... )

Ive looked through the Gregory's Repair manual and they have no mention of a hazard unit, but ive double checked with this generic wiring diagram and it seem easy enough to fit one in.

Ive just realised that the 3 switches on the centre panel are for wipers, heater, and lights? Would this be correct? So does that mean all early minis dont have hazard lights?

It's not a bad thing to have however if you're up to fitting it...

Yep hazard lights are in the same category as reversing lights - having only appeared in the 70s. Hazard light relays are bloody expensive but you can make your own by hooking up the flasher relay both ways. I did a post on the flasher operation awhile back but concisely the flasher relay is a bimetalic switch which is permanently connected to a switched +12v on one side. On the other side it goes to the indicator stalk which in turn is connected to the indicator lights.
By flicking the stalk left or right you connect each light in turn to the flasher relay. Each light is permanently earthed on one side. So when the light is connected to the flasher relay through the stalk the flasher relay goes closed circuit and the bimetalic switch inside it begins to switch on and off rappidly (thus opening and closing the +12v to the lights) and the lights start blinking.

So if you were to take both the indicator light inputs to the indicator stalk and run them through a switch that connects them both to the indicator relay when switched on - you've got hazard light.

It is important to use a 3 terminal swich though that keeps all the terminals disconnected when switched off - otherwise you'll have a permanent connection between the indicators on both sides all the time.

Or if you want to use a regular 2 terminal switch just hook each terminal to indic. light feeds from each side then to use hazard lights just flick the switch and then push the indicator stalk left or right.
