Absolutely.

Assuming it can't shift the water, yeah. In general though, a modern tread pattern on a wider tyre will be better than a narrow one in nearly all conditions, with the exception of flooding when aquaplaning kicks in ;)

I'll keep my skinny tyres and finish off this packet of shortbread fingers i have sitting at my desk then...

Comparing like with like they're a hell of a lot better than the chinese ones i had before.

PS - i know f-all about what tyres can go on what rims - i always just replace like with like - if i have 12 x 4.5 wheels what is the range of widths i can safely put on??

Widest you can go is 165 - which will fit a 4.5-6" wide rim - it may stick slightly too far out from the body legally though..but it would look tough.

the 145's will be fine, i've never driven on those tires - as long as you're happy and they're better than what you had it's all good 8)

I had bridgestones on my other mini 10" wheels and just got some Dunlop D93J and OH MY GOD do they grip, it will be interesting to see how quickly they wear though.

That was my first impression. You actually have to try to spin them. I swapped from 'Mabors' with the upgrade to 10x6 wheels and what a difference.

The D93J's have a lot going for them, they are affordable, have awesome grip and hold up in the wet (they are said to be a wet weather, road legal slick). And to top it off, they are not even the best/ most expensive Formula R tyre. So if they are not good enough, you can get better. 8) For a road car, they are great.

Now I got to try some (more expensive) Yoko's sometime to make a comparo.

I just got a pair of Hankooks when the car went for it's pink slip, about $90-something each (145/70 R12).

I think that they are the Centum K702 and so far i've been very impressed. Although that's coming from a low point of having el cheapo 'Roadstone' tyres on since i bought the car - just like the Falkens they were useless in even the slightest wet or greasy conditions. I'm so happy to be rid of them...

I've only had the car out once in the rain since and i deliberately tested their grip and in comparison it was like night and day, no wheelspins or skidding, just the surefooted handling i remember from having Pirellis on my first mini back in the UK.

As i said it might be early days but i'm happy so far...

good to know theres another choice on the market!, thanks for letting us know.

Ooooooo I like the idea of having Bridgestone tyres, had them on my liberty and loved them to bits. I might just have to take a look at this option, i had no idea that this could be available.

No worries, though really it's quite simple for your choice

Cheap Daily Driver Tyres:
- Sime's - from what i can see these would be the Monza HR7 - no comment but they would fall somewhere close to the falkens and in this sort of performance level i would get whatever is cheaper.
- Falken's - They are average in the dry and poor in the wet - but you can't beat them for wear and they dont look too bad to boot. - Get if you don't plan to drive in wet weather and want long lasting tires.
- Yokohama A048R - Road Legal race slick - ~$220ea - ~10,000km use - awesome grip both wet and dry, expensive.
- Dunlop D01J - Similar to A048R

--------------

Above are what are easily available in Oz - though as you can see they are not the only tires made in the correct size for a mini - the tyre manufacters simple decide not to bring them in.

Those bridgies are from HK

apart from them - If you can track down some Yokohama A539's they would be my choice for a good value performance tyre with good wear characteristics - it's sad that they got taken off the market. Though it is believed some mini place bought up the last few sets..minisport maybe?

There are possibly others as well...

I'd personally be hassling bridgestone to bring those in. ;)

I seem to recall it was maybe A Grade Panels in Melbourne?

watching this thread with interest

the clubman we brought last week has 12"'s and Nankang NE826 145/70R12 69T

I think the NE stands for any grip??????????

Bloody aweful tyres, I've just piceked the car up from the local mechanic and got bags of wheel spin just leaving his driveway in the dry - I won't be sending a learner out on them.

Now on the search of a good all round (and especially wet weather - not that it ever rains in melbourne anymore) tyre - preferably wider than the 145's which are a bit skinny for the flared guards

OKAY I started to do the phone around to see what is available and so far i found 1 A539 but our options are Falken's and Simex, and ive asked about the difference between the two and the Falken brand is supposed to be better (depending on who you ask, an unbiased opinion) as its Jap made and simex is Malaysian.

Doesn't leave much hope.
Still on the hunt for a better tyre.

No 539s to be found any more. I know because I have tried to get some from Bob Jane's and they phoned Yokohama and were told none in Oz and no more to come.

I also have a mate in the tyre business and he couldn't get any either and says that 12" tires are hard to get now unless you go to the semi slick ones.

did you mate say that yoko stopped making them all together, or just stopped sending them here,

hey josh, the tire you posted (tongseng), do you know anyone or anyone else know if they run them,
