I have heard that the MG owning public were not amused with it at the time , soft top mg sports cars had to be rear wheel drive .... MG1300's were accepted as they were a saloon (NOT a sports car old boy) but a sports car was not to be front wheel drive . That attitude had gone by the time Rover made the MG metro turbo however .

Just wouldn't be a real MG old chap... everybody knows REAL sports cars are RWD.
Funny how the old Morris 850 on 5.20x10 crossplies when it arrived used to outhandle a Bugeye Sprite...

Well we all know the MGA was the last real MG sports car , but even they were more of a two seat production car . Then again , the last real MG sports car would have to be the one that most MG owners refuse to accept , the MG Metro 6R4 , purpose built road registered race car , not trendy convertible ... A Metro body shell with a rear mounted V6 driving all 4 wheels , now that's a car ...

It's a nice style job (like most Pininfarina do) but I don't think the poms would have bought it because it looks too much like a Fiat. Doesn't look British enough old chap.

ADO 34 was a great looking car and could have been a real seller, but it was seen by the heads at MG, which of course was part of BMC, that it was too much like the Spridget (Sprite/Midget) which had been released in 1961, and would have been unneccessary competition for it, so was killed off there and then.

The ADO71 from a few years later was based on a 1275GT (Clubby) and was nowhere near as attractive, though still very interesting.

Cush, the 6R4 metro is one of my most favourite cars of all time, i really would like to own & race one, one day.

& there are another couple of cars (kit cars tho) that i`d like to have & that is the "Bantum" (Bannum-- spelling???) they make a bugeye sprite body with all mini running gear & reckon it`s got to be one of the very best kits ever!!!!!!!!!!!!, BMC should have done it way way back.

& the other is an early Porsche roadster looking thing with all mini running gear too, it`s hot also, but not quite everyones cup of tea i spose

anyways, they`re not really mini varients so i probably should`t be posting here about them, just drooling again/still

i`ll just go back to making alloy flywheels & roller rockers

No offence intended here but--> anyone writing a book about minis 30 years ago may not have experienced such worn or stuffed-with components as we are finding these days.
