The correct paint finish is satin black. If you use Wattyl Paints etch primer in black, you should get a perfect match to the origional BMC finish and because it's a primer, you can put it straight over bare steel, just like original.
On the 850 I'm working on, only the boot-side half needed painting and it is now impossible to tell which paint is fresh and which is original, both in colour and texture. It is available in rattle cans but it would be far more economical to buy a litre and spray it.

Interesting - but are not primers porous to some extent and require a sealing coat over the top?
