So do the kind people who have already provided the information the courtesy of reading through first instead of having them have to repeat themselves coz sooner or later they will get sick of having to do it and stop altogether!

cheers

You WILL need an engineer's certificate to fit the Honda disks legally.

As to whether disks and callipers cut down to fit 10" rims will pass, that's up to the engineer.

I am about to talk to an engineer about getting mine approved (at full size, not cut down).

Cheers.

E-mailed an engineer that was recommened by a local brake shop that does a lot of conversions (eg: VP disks onto a Gemini)

The engineer indicated that:

- VicRoads prohibits machining of disk/callipers to fit uinder smaller wheels. So he would not pass a cut down for 10" wheel conversion.

- Vehicle will have to pass a brake fade and effectiveness test as per
Vicroads guidelines.

- Engineer would prefer to see the setup off the car before they are fitted.

- Cost for the certificate is around $800!! (I'm getting him to certify the roll bar, sports steering wheel and mag wheels at the same time)

At that price, I'm not sure it's worth continuing. For $1000 I could probably fit 8.4" Rover Cooper brakes...

I know this would be a can of worms legally but how many "inspectors" and insurance investigators would know what the disc brakes on a 30 year old car were supposed to look like anyway - not like they get to see them every day or side by side.

Yes, they probably wouldn't notice, and yes they are safer. But do you really want the worry if something does go wrong?

Insurance companies can be absolute bastards. If you hit a Rolls and they invaludate your cover, you could be paying for it for the rest of your life.

I'm reconsidering whether the hassle of certification is worth it. I've got a set of disk uprights on the way from the UK now, so I have all the bits to assemble Cooper S disks. The remaining parts I need to reco them (seals, bearings, disks, CVs) will cost a lot less than $800. :?

Brett,
I assume you are using Metro hubs? if so then make sure that you get the correct bolts to hold Cooper 'S' calipers to these hubs. The holes on the capliper are too big. I think that MiniSpares made up some special ones to ensure a snug fit.

[edit, spelling]

No, I'm using a pair of Mini Disk Brake hubs/uprights with the Coper S callipers. So it all bolts together.
