These subframes are getting popular I'm in the process of building one too.
Its almost finished just have to fully weld a few more parts and make the engine mounts.
I used 42mm O.D X 3mm pipe and to be honest its a little big but I'll make it work.
I will have to post some pictures when I get some time.

Big thanks to Tricky for the subframe info on his El Gato thread.

Cheers,
Isaac

Of course the subframe design is popular. It's strong, purposeful and works well :D

hallsey - that's an awsome idea, getting a dodgy shell and make a subframe in advance until you find a better shell.

I thought the same thing until I discovered Morris' factory tollerances...... Sure you can make the frame but DO NOT make the engine mounts until you have the car you are going to use. I repeat DO NOT mount the engine until it is fitted to the car you are going to use.

Edit - You can 'make' the mounts but don't weld them in place untio the motor is in the car.

Ah. I take Morris use tolerances of +/- 10%

Is it really that bad? So clearances for the new engine can be affected so much?

And that's nearly airtight!

Yep, JC's right!

We have found that there can be deviations up to 10mm or more. And when you 'only' have 10mm clearances to deal with, then this has the potential to be a problem.

We trial fit all engines before doing the mounts to get that perfect fit.

Last thing you want to happen is to have the whole thing welded up, only to find to have to move the engine mount a couple of mm to get clearance somewhere.

Mind you, I reckon QBR can do a subframe for a 'remote' customer, and as long as the car hasnt given someone a Liberache, then I reckon the fitment should be spot the dog!

Cheers,
Tricky

Thanks for the advice JC ,I had planned to tack the hole frame together and then take my car off the road for a few weeks and test fit the frame into my car, once I was happy with it put the a series back in. It's a lot of extra work but like I said earlier I want to keep the car on the road for as long as possible.

and thats what i was worried about tricky, with my car having had a front end accident there could be a LOT of hasstles if i was to order a built frame from QBR.
when i get QBR to build me the frame, will the mountss be welded already?

p.s what the hell is a Liberache?

Yes, the mounts will be welded in place, ready to slip the engine in.

Why dont you take some measurements for me, front to rear and diagonally across the engine bay to see if its all square!

Liberache was a gay pianist who died of AIDS-related illnesses - he was quite the entertainer apparently
To give someone a 'Liberache', means to give someone a shunt up the bum

Cheers,
Tricky

Well after Josh had bearing failure, for the sake of a few bucks I put in a
set of big end and main bearings just for peace of mind. Cause once the motors in for the last time stuffed if I want to pull it out again.

:( it's not a good feeling to have to pull it apart - but i feel better knowing other people can learn from it :)

I'd be replacing the oil pump too. Bearings go due to lack of oil and I know of a few Toymotors that have failed more than once in the bearing dept before a new pump was fitted..
