But how did it cause the car to drop a cylinder and consistantly just that cylinder.

BTW - has anyone told Kev07 that we have crap fuel ????

Simon - got an invoice for me yet ???

Yes I did fill up with V power.. why?

cos it's rubbish fuel

The general consensus around here is that V-Power (ex Optimax) is not good in a Mini engine, lotsa people have had problems with it fouling the plugs. BP Ultimate 98-octane is generally agreed to be the best fuel, if you can get it.

Exactly, which is why I don't think this is the primary cause.. it may be a contributing factor, but it's not likely to cause the engine to drop one cylinder all by itself.

Yep - far too many silkies that are not going to come up to show standard - the greater majority are going to clearing sale on sunday unless specific requests come in ????? Want some ?????

well i've just changed the plugs, points, condesor, rotor button, dizzy cap and leads all with brand new items, and still no change. When I have some more cash, i'll run it out to the mechanics to check the head gasket. Failing that, it will probably be up for sale on here. I can't afford to keep a car that requires rebuilds every 4000kms. Rant over.

On a positive note, thanks to everyone for their advice and help. Greatly appreciated guys!
Cheers

If you don't already have one, go to Supercrap and buy a cheap compression tester, then check the compression in the suspect cylinder vs the others.

That'll give you an idea whether it's fuel/ignition, or something more serious like a gasket, valve or rings.

I use a very cheap compression tester, it's called a thumb. `Individually' calibrated. 8)
Works for me, is fully portable, good enough to check for a dud gasket.

Why did you change the plugs, points, condensor, rotor button, dizzy cap and leads?
Why didn't you change the wiper blades as well? 8)
You have to find what is wrong before going to the parts store.

I didn't go to the parts store. Im a mini owner. Therefore don't we all just naturally keep one of everything in stock? I do.... :) Everything else on the car is new, so I figured because they were the only things not replaced when the engine was last rebuilt, I may as well change them now.

Well today, up bright and early, went and hired a car carrier, loaded the mini onto it, drove out to the mechanics, unloaded it, he started it up, and said "I bet your piston in the carby is stuck" 2 screws, a tap of the hammer, and 5 minutes later, shes purring like a kitten. So drove it home and she didn't miss a beat.
Wanna say thanks to everyone out there who gave me their piece of advice, was definetly welcomed and gave me a bit of insight as to what to look at next time. THanks a lot guys.

Ah, good one :)

I think everybody ran with your assumption that you had dropped a specific cylinder, rather than just getting performance eqivalent to such. Nevermind, at least we know what to look for when we actually do drop a pot :)

Glad you got it sorted!
