Yeah its still good usable power....... With 18HP at the wheels, my old 850 still hit 90MPH (thats off the clock 8) ) Gotta be happy with that.

Downhill with a favourable wind?
850's are cool, specially when they're in 850 sports

no doubt someone will remember some lower horsepower ratings, but if 18 is low how did standard 10's and morris 8's manage to work...

"How to modify your mini?", David Vizard

Development of 998cc, 1098cc and especially 1275 engines is way beyond this book now if you want to pay top dollar, or go to people who are very busy because of their good reputation. But if you want to do it yourself this is the guide

See also his later bigger and better known work- `Tuning BL's A Series engine'.
Cheapest place I've found for it is www.pitstop.net.au

Years ago (many) when I was an apprentice, I had a sideline modifying 850 blocks to take new 1100 crank, rods and pistons (no, don't ask...). Gave mountains of torque with the 850 head.
But these days it's easier to fo go find an 1100 motor!

The Standard 10 and the Morris 8 are products of the British RAC horsepower.
They came up with a way of calculating horsepower from the bore size (it dosen't work!) Remember that the Mini 850 was originaly sold in the UK as the Austin 7! The 1100 engine has 10.4 RAC horsepower!

ok then, yeah i just want to create a pocket rocket of a 850, i am considering sinking alot of monye into the engine and i relise that it woun't be worth it, but then again what high performance changes are ? lol

Arias pistions can create custom pistons and ring sets so, i might have a chat with them
and i'll talk to crow cams down in melbourne and see what kind of cam profile they can come up with.
thanks alot for your imput.

850 reving out to 9000rpm would be insane huh, i wonder if its possible

If I remember, it was something like- "square x the bore dia (inches), x # of cylinders, / 2.5".
Stroke length did not come into it. That's why the English liked their small bore, long stroke engines.

If you want low down torque from an 850 you will need...
Lots of compression
small cam
double valve springs
Small carby(more air speed)
small extractors and pipe
inlets ported. leave exhausts alone

What??? ONLY 9000 rpm from an all-out 850?

I have heard of 850-based drag minis in the 1970's that could hit 12000 rpm.

Seriously speaking, you could save money by finding that power in a 1275....

If you are serious about giving an 850 the big rev you want a late 850 `big tail' (1.5") crank. Won't stand 12K though!
Early cranks were only 1-3/8" dia tail... a bit whippy.

It's apprently metric, but so close to HP that you gotta wonder why they bother.

Obviously they used a Metric sized horse! 8)

Hahaha  Sorry I'm late with that

All the jap cars are measured in PS these days, even the racing games!

Quote:
One measure to be aware of though is the "continental horsepower" or PS. This stands for "PferdeStarke" - the German translation of "horse power". In France you sometimes see the same measure being called a "CV" for Cheval Vapeur. This measure was chosen in Europe as being the closest thing to a horsepower that could be expressed in nice round metric units - 75 kilogramme metres per second to be exact. It is commonly used by car manufacturers nowadays and tends to get used synonymously with bhp although it is actually a slightly smaller unit of power. One PS is about 98.6% of one bhp.

To build a nice engine....
twin SU's 1 1/4.sports air cleaners
LCB Extractors... 1 3/4 exhaust. no bigger, sports exhaust(lukey)
High compression.(shave head)
12g202 head, Port inlets, larger valves, unleaded conversion
Warm cam, maybe BMC731. Works from 1500rpm
Balance crank,clutch rods pistons.
Lighten flywheel(revs) change to later flywheel and far better clutch.
Change to cv inner driveshafts.
