Everyone says you need new 'clock' springs when your door handles droop. Not if it's a MK1 (with English door locks?)



The slider and the cam are both worn which results in the handle spindle rotating too far and the handle itself goes beyond horizontal.

Well I've stuffed them now I may as well try a dob of weld and see if they can be rescued

But the clock springs work so well and are so easy to install..... but, I'll admit, a bit pricey.

Wombat, how hard is it to take that cover off the mechanism?

And how did you do it? Did it include an angle grinder..?

Easy to get off - drill out the rivet flange at the back but there in lies the problem - it's not a rivet but a 'post' that is about 3/8" in diameter with a 5/32" hole through the middle - counter sunk with a lip at the top end and an narrow 'extension' at the other that passes though about 1/4" hole in the backing plate and is preened over to secure. By drilling off the preened bit the whole thing is ruined and new ones needed.

New locks are $45-$46 from Karcraft or $25-$35 from MiniSpares and others OS - I think I'll get new ones

hmmmm, thanks. Might need to rethink what I'm trying...

Basically I want a passenger side door mechanism (with lock) on the drivers side, I was going to pull one apart like you've done, switch it over, then try and get it all back together.
