As the title says, i'm ready to throw in my spanners. Our new van, was running alright, but had a flat spot. So i figured, check the points and everything else in the dizzy. So up the ramp it goes, have a look, tidy up the points and dizzy cap posts etc, put it all back, and now she won't go. Thought maybe fuel, so changed the filter, yep shes all pumping fine, plugs are getting wet, cleaned em up, swapped the dizzy cap, rotor, plugs, leads with a another mini that they all worked on. Still no fire. Sadly none of the other 7 minis have points the same as this one. Have cleaned them all up, but still no spark. Am I missing something? Im going to get some new points this week, but am I on the right track? Failing that, whos in south east melbourne that I could pay to come around and have a look at it?
Thanks

have you checked for spark from the coil?
is the low tension wire from the dissy connected?
are the points set up correctly? wire at the bottom of the post? insulators in correct position?
has the carbon piece in the top of the dissy cap gone walkabout?

this is the mini chat part of the forum rehab not the "bitsamissin" or "mitesuebitchy" forum!
so why havn't i seen your magna rehab? :P are they as good as a prius? or should i ask biam? :P

OK, all that stuff up above, is WAY over my head. lol. As for the magna rehab, yes mine is bulletproof. If only I could fit the 3.0ltr V6 and 5spd under the bonnet of the morris, I'd be in heaven. :D

I personally think the flat spot was the timing. Needed to be advanced slightly.

Check the coil? And I think you'll find you can fit the points from an earlier distributor. The 43D dizzy is supposed to take Bosch GL769 points but GL19Vs still fit, just the LT lead doesn't go on properly - but can still be interchanged.

Fuel filter was brand new by the way, had only done a few hundred kms :)

THanks Anto. All that is once again over my head, I'll hire a trailer and tow it to a mechanic and they can fix the bloody thing. I changed the fuel filter coz we got some crappy fuel in northern vic somewhere on the way home from canberra. She made it, just ran like a dog until we refilled just out of melb.

As previously said the points are probably just constantly earthing so wont switch the primary circuit.

If there is a spark at the points they arent earthing and the problem is either in the rotor/cap/leads. A spark at the points should be visible with the ignition on and the points closed open the points with an insulated screwdriver and you should see a spark across them.

Always replace your condensor when you replace your points as they prevent excessive arcing across the points which wears them out. They are very cheap and incredibly simple to replace.

Is there a point gap?

You should be able to fix it yourself with a new set of points etc. Only go to a mechanic if your really lost with it. With that being said it shouldnt be too expensive to get a mechanic to fix it for you.

Best of luck

Matt

I had a similar rough running issue for ages, very intermittent, until one day it just stopped, ended up the positive wire was broken inside the terminal clip, and had been held on by the insulation. trim the wire, new clip 'walla' as andy says, I would say 'hey presto!'

Hmm thanks guys. The only thing I have left to replace is the condensor. Everything else except the points were "borrowed" from the LS engine which has the same distributor. ANd was running at the time. Couldn't get hold of a condensor to match, so will try again when I next get to the shops. Still no go, still no spark at the plugs, points are gapped correctly according to all the literature I've obtained.
