A lot of the rear weight is in the iron trailing arms..
I doubt discs would be much lighter than drums, by the time you fit adaptor plates, rotors etc.
I reckon Bendix type alloy caliper with the integral handbrake linkage (eg Fiat 125) could be possible. They were used on later cars too.
I doubt you will get anything to fit in 10" wheels though.

No one has mentioned Beam Axle yet.....

Wouldn't a beam axle ruin the effects of having independent suspension.

Funnily enough,(when used with coil overs) they are supposed to handle better! And much less unsprung weight. 8)
Too flimsy for the road, from what I've heard & read.

That's what i heard, Doesn't make sense in my mind.
I've got coil overs with trailing arms and no subframe or cones.... That handles pretty well, but i always wondered bout a beam axle

Unlike trailing arms, both wheels stay square to the deck when body leans..
Very common (and cheap) on new small Jap etc cars.

Speaking of weight in the trailing arm, how about fashioning something like this up. Not the whole assembly but the trailing arm idea looks good. If you piss off the cone set up and use coilovers you wouldn't need to worry about fiddling with the ball joint part.

Now it's not a total highjack coz there is rear discs on it...
