no no i heard correctly, and i explained it to him the reason for the stripping is because i want to get the mini spray painted another colour. so he said strip it down for him, he'll sand blast it and do the repairs on the rust and respray it while his at it, then the rest is juz me putting everything back together again.

I think this is far bigger than you realise - you have to dismantle the car and then reassemble it - to be honest it may be beyond your experience even with help.

You need to identify what has to be done first so you can get a realistic expectation of the job at hand. Once you have that you will realise the sacle of the job you will be doing. No mattre how many helpers you have - the job is ultimately yours.

i realise how big the jobs gonna be. we are talking about striping everything in the car down to a bare shell.

thats not the hard part - cataloguing it all and putting it all back in is and when you are putting it back together you will find a sea of new things that need to be done - a big case of shipwrights disease.

Tread with care - make sure you can finish it or you will be left with a half finshed painted shell.

I've been watching this thread for a while and biting my tongue but I think it's time .... You need to be really committed to the resto and not rely on someone doing it cheap when they have time etc or you run the risk of it becoming another of the unfinished project shells that get sold . I know this because I've bought around 30 similar ones over the years from people who took a good car off the road to "fully restore" and once it got into pieces it never made it back together . The main thing that keeps most people interested in mini's is the fun in driving them . I'm a little different and just completely obsessed with them , I can go a year without driving one and still be hooked but a lot of people pull their road car apart , forget how much they loved driving it and lose interest only to sell it as a stripped shel with boxes of parts for a couple of hundred . I think you'd be best to get this guy to weld the rust up and keep Tiny on the road , then get another shell and build it up the way you want while still enjoying Tiny and being enthused by him .

No challenge. But yes i do doubt you. Your not confident enough to do this by yourself and have to ask others to help you do it.

That says to me that it will never get back on the road. You think you know how big this job is.... hahahaha. You have NO IDEA.

Just bodge it.

I'm with ^^^
Joe, maaate, I have to say the paint on that thing is really pretty good... except in a few spots.
No way I'd be doing a full resto on it now, unless you have suddenly got lotsa $$$ because believe me, it'll cost you heaps.

good point
i too brought a stripped shell with a large box or two of bits , it now has gone to another loving owner who is putting it back together as the original owner lost interest and did not label everything properly and i was only beginning my addiction. :D

My car was also bought as a bare shell and a few big plastic rubbish bins full of parts.

Who said:
Bite of more than you can chew, and then chew like hell...

I waded into my first resto armed with a pack of supercrap "Chrom Vandium" (true spelling) sockets and a need to make things shiny and work nice.

I learnt more from my mistakes I made here (like correct thread types, bolt lengths, tension settings, good gasket practices, self machining and finishing (to reduce costs on a 2nd year apprentice wage of 142 per week in '91/'92), sanding, filing, bearing and seal insertion and removal, auto electrical, bagging and tagging, part numbers, material selection and spotting bodgy parts salesman (Anyone remember Murrays's Motors in Brisbane?? ) and spray painters.)

I learnt more than I ever did just thinking about it and refused to be pidgeon holed as a sparky and not a trades mechanic/ spray painter/ fitter turner/welder/auto spark. Make a few mistakes and show the scars later on to your kids.

Dive in and get used to cycling to work for a while. Nobody remembers a boring youth.
