The radiator shroud lettering looks a bit dodgy ?? The car number (585) is much smaller than the prefix , (YG2S4) , should be the same size IMHO , and the 2 appears to be backwards ??

Hard to tell from pics (body number), but I can tell you the front grille panel is not original, looks like a pommy replacement.

Is that an ID plate I spy on the firewall?

What's he trying to prove with all the other mr bean crap and useless cooper info?
That sort of procedure makes me suspicious

The style of the chassis number on the radiator shroud looks almost correct - the prefix YG2S4 (which you can only make out the 4) should be slightly smaller (6mm) than the chassis number (10mm) and as a single strike. The chassis number digits were struck individually but hand and will be a bit eratic in placement.

However, yes, that does look like an ID plate on the firwall, which no Mk 2 Mini of any sort, Cooper S or other, should have, Instead there should be a compliance plate (if delivered after 31 December) located in a different position (varies according to when the car was made) or if the car was built after 06/69 and before 01/70 there should not be either plate.

Also, the front grille panel does not look correct, as it should have a diagonal support bracket (which of course may have been removed). :?

We go into a lot more detail on this, and how to identify a genuine Cooper S, all the little things to look out for, in the next issue of The Mini Experience, due out 15 March.

Cheers,
Watto.

On the early 69 cars without either plate, I have found the holes for the plate will still exist in the bulkhead. They were later deleted.
Neither here nor there. I just felt I needed to throw that in..

Well, I'd like to know where that info comes from.

I've gone into a fair bit of detail in the next mag, but suffice to say, the Leyland comprehensive workshop manual states; "The identification plate was deleted from some Saloon Models in June 1969".

However, we were able to find a Mk1 Cooper S from April 1969 which had neither ID plate or compliance plate, and had no holes drilled in the bulkhead for the plate.

I would have thought the holes would be drilled when the plate was attached, but this is an interesting point. If the holes were drilled during the production of the shell, before painting, then it is possible they could fill with paint - but then they would have to find and re-drill the holes to fit the plate, which sounds like too much double handling.

Cheers,
Watto.

G'day,

I had a 69 Mini K which had the holes drilled in the firewall but no I.d. plate there or anywhere else and the holes also looked never to have been used as they had original paint in them.

I've also seen another K of about the same vintage that had the same thing so dont think it's uncommon.

BMC probably just forgot to tell the poor mug on the line to stop drilling the holes! :)

Just picked up the latest TME mag Watto another great read mate. :D

Mal.

At $1,025 (current bid) its probably at the right money for a round-nose shell which is what it should viewed as. If he thinks its worth 2,000 quid (A$4,400) i suggest he carries on but changes hands a little more often. :P

He had a mk1 S short motor, Mk1 S ID plate and S rims with the shell in that auction.

This one is shell alone. Watch for the other bits to surface soon

I figure the holes would have been done as part of a job lot, perhaps they were left over from earlier stocks only to be phased out as they ran out ?? Who knows. I'm not sure if the holes were drilled or pressed.

As for where it came from, my 2 mk 1.5 (apologies to Morris 1100 :) ) S shells I've have owned both had them.
