is there a reset button on the Coper S? I've done a service and new oil filter and new oil, checked the oil level. used nearly 5 litres ( I even drained the oil cooler) could it be a wire loose

Have you checked the pressure release valve? It hasn't got crud in it and has decided to jam open allowing all your oil pressure go?

no got heaps of pressure. 50psi at idle and 75psi at driving speed.

just the oil filter light in the centre speedo won't go off

Ahhh, I see.

Clean the connections? If your filter looks anything like it does on mine, being oily it attracts ALOT of dirt. The connection could just be dodgy. Do the terminals look clean? My 2c.

probably a service reminder light

try holding the odomoter button down for 5 secs
or hold it down and turn the key on

worked on my falcon and VW Van

Resetting Oil Service Light on your 2002 - 2006 MINI Cooper and Cooper S, and 20027 - 2008 MINI Convertibles:

1) Press and hold the trip button
2) Insert key and turn to position 1
3) Watch for RESET to appear
4) Release the button, then press & hold it again
5) Wait for the RESET to flash
6) Release the button, and then press & release (once only)
7) Service interval should then be reset to next interval

Don't worry then, I have a cartride and the said cables come out of the top of the housing that the filter screws into.

If you have a spin on type head you shouldn't have the cables. In that case I would assume a faulty sender unit, try a different one maybe?

If you have a cooper S then the wiring is there regardless of the type of filter you have.

I bet the wire is dangling loose and either lost its insulation and is shorting against an earth somewhere.

So - if there is no wire on the filter head and no provision for one then the oil filter light not working and hasn't since the spin on head was installed. If the light is on its because the wire is shorting against something in the loom. Look for - its in in the loom in front of the oil filter somewhere. Put new tape on it.

You sure it isn't your alternator light instead? Is it red?? There wasn't even a light fitted in the dash for an oil pressure alert.

Maybe you have bumped a wire off...

Brett, it was made WAAAYYY before they tought of having a reset button - was the light permanently on before you changed the oil?

find the wire, and look at it - it'll either be attached to a knobby thing poking out of the drivers side of the block, also with the skinny tube running up to the dash, or a wire on the oil filter housing

Mick, I think MK1's had the light in the speedo, but no globe behind it, maybe someone set this one up

Gadget - I think you're assuming this is Brett's Bini he's talking about, I don't think it is ;)

Right, it is the Mk1. :lol: I was not sure!

A Mk1 has a filter light (well some do!). If the filter is bypassing the light will come on. I have had this happen when using thick fresh oil in a new filter. After it warms up it is fine, but when the oil is cold and thick it will block the filter until it warms up. What oil are you running?

A little word about oil pressure and the Cooper S, My Mk1 gets an air lock in the oil cooler when it has not been started for a while and it will not pick up oil regardless of what you do. I need to undo the hose from the oil cooler to the block and prime the pump with an oil can.

Probably the oil cooler sucking air. It was missing the grille spacers when I got the car and the cooler has a few grooves down the front. It does not really matter as it only gets started every couple of years when I need to cut the grass.
