Mick and colin, I have the breather tubes coming from both tanks and they aren't blocked, one was and it was replaced. I have replaced all fuel hoses from and too the fuel pump so no leaks there.

Gallinski, I have checked the gear lever boot a few times and it is fine.

Colin, That is what I have noticed sometimes, it is worse with the windows down, I thought it was causing a low pressure zone in the car and sucking more air in through the leak(wherever it is). It has been a while since my physics days so that could be completely wrong.

Thanks again all for the ideas.
Steve

My car had a stubby resonator outlet a while ago which didn't extend out beyond the rear beaver panel, and on the highway the exhaust fumes in the car were literally dangerous. Driving with the windows up was NOT safe.

On one trip, to keep driving without suffocating I got some old roofing tin and a big hose clamp and made a makeshift extension 'cannon', out to the line of the bumper and that was MUCH better.

Now I've got a proper exhaust tip, and it's all good. The aerodynamics back there definitely bring exhaust fumes up through the boot and into the car if the exhaust is set up badly.
