Why were English 998 coopers fitted with the same distributor as Australian ones but with different advance curves. Obviously the 'A' at the end of the serial number denotes the Australian one.

eg: English 40958 advance 28-32@5500, 26-30@4400, 22-26@2200, 16-20@1800, 3-9@1000, 0-3@600 with vacuum unit 3-7-16

Australian 40958 A advance 16 max@3300, 11-13@2000, 8-10@900, 1 1/2-4 1/2@500 with vacuum unit 3-8-7

Does this mean the english ones were quicker or was it to do with our fuel octane ratings?

Which is the better distributor performance wise?
