I'm with you EAB.... a reliable 850 that'll do 10,000rpm and 100bhp

I've wanted to do that for years but can't find out how to get an 850 crank to handle that without using a 998 crank and screwing with the capacity :( Plus I can't find a ratty enough 850 to do it to , they've become too desirable to the point I'm starting to seriously look at the two I've been given that are sitting in a dam about 400klm's south west of here :)

jeez... I gave away the 850 that was in my van.... it was a good little runner

were are being asked about 'dream' engines, so we can dream about 10,000rpm and reliability.... reality might be 10,000rpm for 10 seconds of course

I'd like to see a dyno plot, if it can even get to 10,000 there'd be no power up there anyhow.
Go fit a Honda if you want a screamer. :P

The Mini Magazine (Jan 2008) has an article on the original mini racers that includes a small section on Charles Bernstein who raced an 850cc in the 1970's, 115bhp at 10,500rpm which was later upped to 11,000rpm. It had an arden 8 port with fuel injection. Love to get some photos of this car. The mag has a small photo showing Charles holding the rear of the car in the air. Now I wonder where I've seen that before?

Does anyone know what book Charles Bernstein appears in (not the poet) holding the rear of his mini in the air? I've looked on the net and I can find no reference to him or his car. I'd love to get a copy of the photo for my shed wall. And I'd also love to get a photo of Paul Gulson holding up his car as well. Any ideas where to look?

I think there's one in Mini Minor Downunder, and another in Rob Golding's Mini 25.... one or both of those books have a photo of someone holding up the bum of a mini, but I can't remember which one!

I think that one is in "amazing mini" by peter filby.

Published in mid to late 80s, OOP now. Watch ebay, I got a copy for around $15.

Cheers

Nope , Rob Goldings books , "Mini after 25 years" and "Mini after 30 years" but not "Mini" (the first one) , this is from page 111 of "Mini after 30 years" , the identical photo is also on page 115 of "Mini after 25 years" .

And here's Paul Gulson lifting the other one from page 71 of "spotlight on Mini Minor Downunder"

Thanks Blokes. Sorry to get OT with this thread. That's exactly what I'm after. I have a copy of the article on the Gulson car when it was featured in Racing Car news. I think it had a couple of extra pictures.
